A Philosophical Gathering

Published: March 02, 2011

CHENEY, Wash. - Thanks to the work of two of its philosophy professors, Eastern Washington University will host the 38th annual convention for the Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy, March 10-12, in Spokane's Davenport Hotel. EWU beat out bids from Julliard and Fordham University in New York City.

The society draws together an eclectic and collegial group of scholars from all over the world to share their research on American philosophy and pragmatism. Overall, the event will attract up to 180 attendees, and feature more than 100 presenters in various formats - including EWU Alumnus and local award-winning author Jess Walter. He will be presenting original work at the Host Plenary Session on Thursday the 10th.

"Having Jess Walter's inclusion in the program was a major boon for our bid," said EWU Philosophy Professor Terrance MacMullan, who along with Kevin Decker has worked hard to bring this event to the Inland Northwest. "We're trying to make this a Northwest affair, an Eastern affair."

The three-day program will conclude Saturday evening with the EWU Jazz Ensemble.
