Master in Teaching (MIT)

Eastern Washington University's Master in Teaching is a graduate degree program designed for individuals planning a career change into the field of teaching. The program, accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, offers students the opportunity to acquire:

  1. State of Washington elementary or secondary teaching certificate and
  2. A Master in Education degree in Elementary Teaching or Secondary Teaching

The MIT program is a rigorous, full-time 5 quarter graduate degree program blending an increasing field experience throughout the full-year internship in a K-12 classroom with day and evening classes. Course work will be linked to classroom experience, and will meet the new statewide certification requirements for K-12 teachers.

Each cohort group begins in summer quarter and completes the certification stage at the end of spring quarter (4th quarter). The MEd degree will be granted after completion of the next stage of the program, which requires additional course work and a final master's research report with orals (usually one more quarter of course work and Orals Defense).

The Program Features:
  • Opportunity to attain certification to teach at the elementary school level (K-8 endorsement), or to focus upon middle school years and secondary education (5-12 endorsement)
  • An increasing field experience throughout the academic year of on-site school experience working directly with a cooperating teacher with required approximately 1,000 hours working in a school
  • Eastern faculty supervisors assigned to each student will provide individual assistance throughout the program
  • Graduate program advisors will assist students through the master's degree stage of the program
  • Site-based course work in an interdisciplinary seminar format to link the professional knowledge base with classroom practice.
