Exercise Science
The exercise science degree has three tracks to address the needs of current student interest in the major, a pre-physical therapy, a pre-occupational therapy and a straight exercise science track. For the two tracks leading to either a DPT or MS OT we have incorporated all pre-requisites specific for Eastern's programs. The core program for all tracks is composed of scientific and practical-based courses designed to prepare the graduate for either a graduate program in PT, OT or an exercise science specialty or a position in health and fitness. Jobs can be found in agencies such as YMCA's, corporate fitness programs, hospitals, cardiac rehabilitation centers and health clubs.
The core program is constructed to give the student a broad background in the basics of anatomy and exercise physiology. Advanced work is undertaken in specialty areas specific to current certifications, or populations that can benefit from physical activity ranging from children to the elderly. As mentioned above, two tracks have additional course work pre-requisites for the graduate programs, and each of the tracks has a practical course, either a 200-hour practicum for PT and OT or a 400-hour internship for the exercise science track.
We have a human performance laboratory where qualified students are given the opportunity to interact and counsel clients of varied ages and physical abilities or be involved in research. Laboratory experiences include such things as administration of exercise tolerance tests, exercise prescription, nutrition information and body composition analysis.
