Prior to moving to Washington state and joining EWU, Dr. Shields worked for 12 years at Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, OH where she held the positions of Assistant/Associate Professor of Telecommunications/Women's Studies, Director of the Women's Studies Program and Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences for faculty, curriculum and general education where she led a successful general education reform.
She has taught a wide range of courses in speech communication, feminist media studies and qualitative research, ranging from introductory courses through doctoral advising and seminars.
An internationally recognized communications and feminist media scholar, Dr. Shields writes from a cultural perspective on gender media content and media audiences specifically in the areas of advertising, television and film. She is also an expert in theoretical and methodological approaches to visual literacy.
She is the author of Measuring Up: How Advertising Affects Self Image, published by the University of Pennsylvania Press as well as over 50 articles, chapters and presentations in media and cultural studies. Measuring Up was the winner of the 2004 Award for Outstanding Research in Visual Communication by the Visual Communication Division of the National Communication Association.
In 2010-11 she served as President of the Council of Colleges of Arts and Sciences (CCAS), the leading national organization of arts and sciences deans.
Vickie Rutledge Shields received her M.A. and PhD degrees in Communication from the Ohio State University. Prior to receiving her doctorate she was awarded The Ohio State University Presidential Fellowship, one of 30 full fellowships awarded annually by The Graduate School, The Ohio State University in a university-wide competition, to doctoral candidates in the final year of dissertation research who have demonstrated outstanding scholarly accomplishment and potential. She received her B.A. in communication from Boise State University where she was named BSU Alumna of the Year in 2005. In that same year she completed the Management Development Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
Kayleen Islam-Zwart, Ph.D.
Associate DeanSenior Hall, 121APhone: 509-359-2380Fax: 509-359-6732Email: kislamzwart@ewu.eduDr. Kayleen Islam-Zwart is Associate Dean of the College of Social & Behavioral Sciences and Social Work, Director of the Eastern Washington University Psychology Major at Bellevue College, and Professor of Psychology.
She has taught a wide range of courses in forensic and correctional psychology, cognitive assessment, clinical psychology, and psychology of women, including advising and supervision of Master's theses. While at Eastern Washington University she has been recognized as Psi Chi Faculty of the Year, a merit recipient in the areas of service and teaching, and Professor of the Year. She has a strong scholarship record including publications in the Journal of Traumatic Stress and Criminal Justice and Behavior, and Principal Investigator for the $169,280 National Science Foundation ADVANCE IT Catalyst Grant awarded in 2010. She serves on the editorial board for the journal Criminal Justice and Behavior.
Kayleen Islam-Zwart received her MS in Psychology and her PhD in Clinical Psychology from Idaho State University in Pocatello. Her dissertation examined The Impact of Sexual Assault History Upon Females' Adjustment to Incarceration. In 2001, she was awarded the Idaho State University Doctoral Division Outstanding Student Achievement award. She completed her BS with a major in pre-professional psychology and a minor in corrections at Mankato State University in Minnesota in 1996. That same year she was awarded the William Rucker Award for Psychology.
Pui-Yan Lam, Ph.D.

She has proven leadership abilities and is an entrepreneur in the area of higher education, leadership and diversity. Her dedication and work in this area includes being a founder of the group Mosaic (a social support group for faculty from diverse racial and cultural backgrounds) and also Weaving the Threads: A Night of Women's Empowerment. She has served on the President's Advisory Committee for Diversity and has worked closely with international students and international initiatives at EWU. Pui-Yan has worked with numerous McNair fellows and the PICI program with Lewis and Clark High School Students and works closely with the Women's and Gender Studies program and the Diversity programs at EWU.
