Children's Studies
Eastern Washington University's major in Children's Studies was the first in the nation. The curriculum of this interdisciplinary program focuses on the developmental, learning and social issues of children from birth to 18. The Children's Studies major incorporates coursework from departments across the University, including Education, Sociology, and Counseling, Educational and Developmental Psychology.

She holds a position as Professor in the Department of Sociology and Justice Studies, teaching courses on children, gender, and family. Published articles include “Bridging Third-Wave Feminism and Family Pluralism” (2004).

Dr. Tedescoe has been honored with the 2007 and 2009 Chertok Dean's Honor Award, 2006 Eastern Washington University Faculty of the Year award, 2005 Teaching Excellence Award: Edward R. Murrow School of Communication (WSU), 2005 Graduate and Professional Student Association Teaching Award (WSU), 2005 Certificate of Excellence Distinguished Dissertation Award (WSU), 2006 and 2009 Certificate of Appreciation Award Children Studies Program for the "Cheney Hangout."

Daniel Bigler, MA

A new faculty member at Eastern, Daniel Bigler holds a masters degree in Children's Studies from King's College London and is finishing an additional degree in Children's Rights at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland. He has previously worked in a Reggio Emilia-inspired preschool, studied children's play and peer cultures in an adventure playground in London, and been involved in a number of groups that advocate for greater play opportunities for children in the United States.
His current research interests include children's play and play spaces, the hidden 'street' cultures of children, incorporating children as co-researchers in academic research, and the history of organizations like the Boy Scouts and summer camps and their influence on concepts of 'Childhood'. In his personal life, Daniel also spends a lot of time exploring big cities and imagining himself as a dinosaur.

Stacy Warren, PhD

In addition, she is director of EWU's certificate program in Geographic Information Systems. In spite of an undergraduate degree in computer science, her lifelong fascination with amusement parks sparked an interest in cultural geography. She has spent much of her career examining the various ways the Disney Company, in particular, has influenced urban and suburban design and shaped cultural landscapes. Current research interests include children's use of space and the spaces built (by adults) for them, from orphanages to elementary schools to Disneyland.

Her background is children and youth in schools and libraries. She oversees the Curriculum Center collection in Eastern's JFK Library, with a children's literature and teaching collection. Given her interest in diversity, especially curriculum materials and teaching, she co-created the course Examining Equity in Children's Programs (CDST 439) and taught it online during Winter 2011.
