Women's and Gender Studies Director207 Monroe HallPhone: 509.359.2409Email: swinkle@ewu.eduI have been at EWU since 1983, when I came to the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures as an Assistant Professor in German. I have taught a wide variety of courses in German language, literature, and culture, in addition to feminist theory, and issues in women's studies. I have traveled many times to Europe and especially Germany, where I studied in Heidelberg and Erlangen in the 1970s. I taught and co-directed a summer program in Lubeck, Germany for several years, from 1997-2004.
My dissertation research centered on the representation of women in 18th century German literature, and much of my subsequent scholarship has focused on women and gender in German literature, culture, and film. I have been active with the Women's & Gender Studies program since 1983, and I have been Director of the Program since 1998.

She is especially interested in how these issues are represented in mass media, and the complex relationship between media representation and everyday understanding. She is the author of Capitalizing on the Curse: The Business of Menstruation, and scholarly articles about communication and menstruation; body image and dieting; sexual harassment; and folklore surrounding menstruation and menarche. In addition to blogging occasionally for Ms., she is a contributor and managing editor for re:Cycling, the blog of the Society for Menstrual Cycle Research (SMCR).
