For 2012-13 scholarships, apply online via the EWU scholarship application at http://www.ewu.edu/scholarships and should be completed no later than February 15 for consideration the following academic year. NOTE that there are additional Biology Department requirements that need to be submitted to the Financial Aid & Scholarship Office in order to be considered for a biology scholarship.

EWU Biology Department Scholarships
The EWU Biology Department considers undergraduate and graduate student awards a valuable and necessary service provided for our students. For full-time Biology majors, we award or make recommendations for awarding several scholarships. To be considered for one of the following department scholarships, complete the online application on EagleNET (under Financial Aid tab). (See EWU Scholarships for more information on the process.) Additionally, complete the following requirements for each scholarship you would like to be considered for and turn in to the Financial Aid & Scholarships Office, 102 Sutton Hall, by the identified deadline - they will match up with your online application. Be sure ALL requested information and recommendations as identified below are completed for EACH biology scholarship.* For further information, contact:

| Cheney Environmental Association Scholarship (formerly Cheney Recycling Center) | Varies $1,000-$2,400 | Junior or senior Environmental Studies major during the academic year of award (or strong career orientation toward environment / conservation). Selection based on combination of scholarship, merit, and financial need. | Submit a letter stating professional goals, why you feel qualified for this scholarship, and other relevant information (department, university, and community activities). Recipient may be required to volunteer 5 hours per quarter at the EWU Recycling Center during the year of award. |
| Pathology Associates Medical Laboratories (PAML) Medical Technology Scholarship | Varies up to $3,500 | Junior or senior Medical Technology, Biology, or Chemistry major during the academic year of award. Minimum 2.7 GPA. Preference given to applicants who are laboratory focused. Selection based on combination of scholarship and merit with some consideration given for financial need. | Submit an essay describing qualifications (including involvement in laboratory biology), college experiences, scholarship need, and professional goals and aspirations. Include 2 letters of recommendation from persons addressing your merit for scholarship (be sure contact information is included). |

Minimum 3.0 cumulative college GPA. Award is presented to biotechnology-related students in even academic years and general biology in odd academic years. | Submit an essay addressing: (1) lab, field, or biology-related research / experience; (2) professional goals; (3) thesis project description; (4) how scholarship will assist in thesis research / achieving goals; (5) outline progress toward graduation; and (6) any other pertinent information. | Safari Club | $2,500 | Junior or senior standing during the academic year of the award. Minimum 3.5 GPA. Biology or Environmental Science major with emphasis on wildlife. Must be a hunter. | Submit an essay stating professional plans and aspirations, accomplishments, hunting experience, why you feel qualified for this scholarship, and any other pertinent information. Include 1 professional letter of reference (be sure contact information is included). Awardee is expected to attend annual banquet. |
*In addition to completing the online EWU Scholarship Application and its stated requirements, to be considered for a specific Biology Department scholarship, follow the requirements exactly as outlined. Be sure essays identify the scholarship/s you are applying for. If applying for multiple scholarships, the same letters of recommendation may be used for the different scholarships as long as they meet the identified requirements. ALL REQUIRED ITEMS MUST BE SUBMITTED TO THE EWU FINANCIAL AID AND SCHOLARSHIP OFFICE (SUTTON 102) BY THE APPLICATION DEADLINE (GENERALLY NO LATER THAN FEBRUARY 15 FOR THE FOLLOWING ACADEMIC YEAR).

Students applying for the EWU Biology Department scholarships outlined above will also be considered for any Eastern Washington University scholarships for which they qualify. These may include the Associated Industries Bright Promise Scholarship, Powell/Schoffen Scholarship and Wittenbach Trust for health-related majors (undergraduate) or the John Joy Science Award for science-related graduate students. Contact the EWU Financial Aid and Scholarship Office for information on these and other scholarships related to science and health.

| EWU Biology Graduate Fellowships | Varies up to $7,000 | Biology graduate student who has been admitted to Graduate Program or has been recommended for admittance to Graduate Program AND has a minimum 3.0 GPA. | By March 1st submit to the Biology Department Graduate Committee Chair (SCI 258) a completed Application for Biology Graduate Fellowship (consideration based on admittance to Graduate Program).
Students receiving graduate fellowships are expected to work 20 hours per week while carrying at least 10 credits. Teaching is often required, but research or other activities may be substituted at the department's discretion. The EWU Application for Admission to Graduate Program is located in the back of the graduate catalog or online at http://www.ewu.edu/grad.xml and is sent to the Graduate Office along with transcripts, GRE scores, TOEFL scores (if appropriate), and application fee. Recommendations should be sent separately by those who are providing them. One other form, Biology Department Supplemental Graduate Application, should be sent directly to the Biology Department Graduate Committee Chair. | EWU Biology Graduate Student Mini Research Grant Program | Varies up to $500/ qtr | EWU graduate student conducting thesis research. | By the 2nd Friday of Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters (or other identified deadline) submit to the Biology Indirect Cost Committee Chair (SCI 258) a proposal identifying specific objectives, significance, procedures/rationale, budget justification, other financial support, and literature cited. Proposal should be no more than 3 double-spaced pages (not including list of citations) and must be signed by a faculty advisor. | Hollister-Stier Textbook Assistance Fund | Varies | Current EWU Biology major with lab-related research emphasis (undergraduate and graduate). Expressed need for assistance purchasing required textbooks. Possibility for funds to purchase supplemental reference books and supplies. | By the second day of Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters submit to the Operations Manager in the Biology Department (SCI 258A) 1 page with: (1) Name / Address / Phone / EWU ID Number; (2) Major / Option and Year in School; (3) Career Plans; (4) Laboratory Research Experience (not classwork); (5) Community Service and Work Experience; (6) List of Required Texts with cost and course number identified (and/or list of supplemental reference books/supplies requested) ~ be sure to indicate which books are required and which are suggested.(NOTES: [1] Awards may not be made every quarter. [2] Vouchers will be issued for the EWU Bookstore after recipients have been selected ... do not submit a request for books already purchased that cannot be returned. [3] Awarded books are considered on loan from Biology Dept. lending library.) |
| Turnbull Laboratory for Ecological Studies (TLES) Research Scholars | $2,500 | Junior or Senior Biology major during the academic year of award. Preference given to General Biology, Botany, Zoology, or Environmental Biology options. | By March 1st submit to the Biology Department office (SCI 258) a completed Biology Department Scholarship Application (click on link to open pdf file); attach an essay expressing your ecological interests (terrestrial, aquatic, algae, fungi, plants, vertebrate animals, invertebrate animals, etc.) and past extra-curricular experiences in biology or ecology. Identify career interests/goals following graduation; attach 2 letters of recommendation from EWU Biology faculty; and attach transcripts. Recipients are required to dedicate a minimum of 35 hours toward ecological research at (or based out of) TLES to be completed within Spring, Summer, and/or Fall quarters. Payment is dependent on successful completion of research proposal/execution/presentation of final project. |
