College of Science, Health & Engineering

Each Spring, EWU freshmen or sophomore college students are eligible to apply for a paid six-week internship working with children participating in mathematics and science activities through various Summer camps.  The internships are sponsored by the Robert Noyce NSF grant at EWU.  A total of six internships are available each Summer. The goal of the Summer Internship Program is to recruit underrepresented individuals into 7-12 science or math teaching.  This includes but is not exclusive to individuals of color, disabilities, and of lower socio-economical background.   All applicants must pass a background check to qualify for the internship.

Typically, the internship begins  in mid-June and goes through the end of July.  Students are expected to give a scheduled 30 hours per week (generally 8-2:30 daily) and the internship will involve travel in the Cheney and Spokane area including area wetlands and Turnbull Wildlife Refuge.  Also included is a white water raft trip down the Spokane River in May as a get-to-know-you experience with children from the Kalispel Tribe who will work with the interns during the summer.

Tentative Schedule:

In general, Mondays will be spent on preparation of activity materials at EWU and activity facilitation visits on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.  On Fridays, students will meet with the internship coordinator for feedback on their teaching, as well as, continuing to work on curriculum.  The internship includes one overnight stay at Camp Four Echo on Coeur d'Alene Lake in conjunction with activities with the Girl Scouts. 

• Week one of the internship will take place at EWU.  It will involve development of science and math activities as well as training on inquiry teaching in math and science.
• Week two will take activities to Spokane sites.
• Week three will prepare and deliver activities for the Kalispel tribal children
• Week four will involve preparation and delivery of activities to Girl Scouts at Camp Four Echoes.
• Week five will take activities to Spokane sites.
• Week six will take activities to Spokane sites.

Eligibility:

• U.S. citizen or permanent resident alien
• Declared STEM major or seriously considering a STEM major
