Impact Generations of Eastern's Hispanic Students

Eastern Washington University's Hispanic Legacy Scholarship Endowment Fund will last a lifetime and provide a legacy of support for a growing number of Hispanic students.

Why is This an Important Initiative for Eastern Washington University?

Hispanics/Latinos are the second-largest minority group in the United States. Experts expect the nation's population of Latinos will continue to increase, as will their younger generation and their higher education needs. Population figures for eastern Washington mirror those predictions. In the 2009-10 academic year, Hispanic students comprised 8 percent of the 1,500 students in the EWU freshman cohort.

This is a crucial time for EWU to create opportunities for low-income, first-generation Hispanic students to learn, grow and succeed in their education, so that they may enter the competitive workforce with the necessary skills to succeed in their careers. We understand their success will, in turn, benefit the world, including our region and beyond.

With an initial target investment of $1 million, The Hispanic Legacy Scholarship Endowment Fund will provide $200,000 annually in immediate scholarship support for qualified Hispanic students. The remaining $800,000 will continue to grow toward a $3 million endowment, which will provide scholarships in perpetuity.
