More than 125 years ago, EWU began as a small teacher-education school called the Benjamin P. Cheney Academy. Now the demand for higher education has expanded to include career preparation in fields like business, the sciences and healthcare as well as training for civic and community leadership and the development of the arts. EWU has risen to the challenge of fulfilling this demand with graduate programs in all of these areas.

Eastern's more than 260 graduate faculty members are active scholars, dedicated teachers and effective mentors. They engage their students in a wide range of supervised and independent research and in the professional preparation required for specialized practice in their chosen fields. The University is awarded millions of dollars each year in competitive grants from external funding agencies for research, training and service. Eastern's graduate students have the exceptional benefit of well-funded research facilities and the student-centered faculty of a comprehensive university.
EWU in the Inland Northwest
Eastern Washington University is located in Cheney, just 17 miles from Spokane, and our presence can be felt throughout the Northwest. Seventy-six percent of our alumni live and work in Washington state, and Eastern's mission fosters community involvement and collaboration among faculty, staff and students. EWU is an important part of our region's economy and way of life.
Eastern's beautiful 300-acre campus sits just minutes from more than 20 lakes, rolling mountains and the Turnbull National Wildlife refuge, all of which offer fishing, hiking, biking, boating, wildlife viewing and more. This unique geographic positioning allows students the serenity to focus on their studies, the spirit of a small college town, the renowned recreational opportunities of the Northwest and the invaluable internship possibilities, civic involvement and cultural activities offered by a major metropolitan area.
