Reception Honors Carpenter

Literacy degree creator retiring...Carpenter, EWU Library, retiring

CHENEY, Wash. - Eastern Washington University Libraries will host a reception to honor Dr. Marilyn Carpenter from 2-4 p.m., Monday, May 23, in the JFK Library Curriculum Center, on the Cheney campus. Carpenter is retiring this spring after 30 years as a teacher, professor and staff developer. Even though she is retiring, her legacy will live on through her generous donation of more than 10,000 titles in children's and young adult literature to the Curriculum Center.

"Marilyn's generous gift allows students and faculty to enjoy the best books in so many topics with a wide array of authors and illustrators," says Nadean Meyer, EWU Learning Resources Librarian. "EWU students and faculty now have a wealth of books available to utilize in their coursework or simply to enjoy. Thank you, Marilyn."

Carpenter first began collecting these books in California where she wrote a column for the Los Angeles Times on children's books and also developed literacy curriculum for local schools. She began receiving complimentary books from major book publishers and used these books to highlight her ideas with students. She continues to share her love of children's literature through her blog posts at http://marilyncarpenter.wordpress.com/. There, you can find her annual "best children's books" list.

Carpenter oversees the literacy degree in the Education Department at Eastern, having developed the current program. She received the Outstanding Faculty Award in Teaching in 2008, and the Graduate Faculty of the Year Award in 2009. She has served on a variety of committees including the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) and the Worlds of Words (WOW) website at the University of Arizona, where she received her PhD in literacy.

Join us to honor her time, dedication and generous gift to the university. The Curriculum Center is located on the lower level in the JFK Library. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Nadean Meyer at 509.359.4262, or nmeyer@ewu.edu.

This event is sponsored by EWU Libraries. Persons with special needs may call Janice at 359. 2264 to make arrangements one week prior to the event.
