Market-based raises...faculty, salary increases

CHENEY, Wash. - The Eastern Washington University Board of Trustees has ratified a three-year contract between the university and the United Faculty of Eastern (UFE). The agreement, effective Sept. 1, will take a significant step toward improving faculty compensation and bringing salaries up to market levels by discipline.

The contract calls for market adjustments for each of the next three years, based on how a faculty member's salary compares to the average for their rank and discipline at peer institutions. The market adjustments are based on data compiled from the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources (CUPA-HR). The goal is to have faculty salaries reach the market average by the end of three years.

A study conducted by the EWU provost's office compared faculty salaries against figures from CUPA--HR, and the study revealed more than 75 percent of current faculty at Eastern earn less than the median salary of faculty at the same rank in the same discipline at similar schools.

EWU President Rodolfo Arévalo approved the market level review and the process for determining salary levels. "I am very happy that the faculty and administration could agree on a process to improve overall faculty compensation," said Arévalo.

"The agreement represents a significant development in recognizing and valuing the work of our faculty," said Rex Fuller, EWU provost and vice president for Academic Affairs. Fuller noted that by utilizing market data as the basis for salary comparisons, Eastern was able to take proactive steps to keep faculty salaries at competitive levels in the future. "This development, coupled with efforts to recruit faculty from national and international markets, will reinforce the university's commitment to supporting a highly accomplished and dedicated faculty," said Fuller.

The United Faculty of Eastern also praised the new contract. "This agreement comes from a renewed sense of teamwork and shared goals between the UFE and the administration, and we're grateful to both bargaining teams" said Tony Flinn, professor of English and president of the UFE. "And since faculty working conditions are the students' learning conditions, this agreement will infuse our educational environment with a new, refreshed energy."
