Reading Room Renamed

Published: June 02, 2011

CHENEY, Wash. - The reading room inside historic Hargreaves Hall on the Eastern Washington University campus is now named the Walter and Myrtle Powers Reading Room, in honor of the couple's significant gift and longtime support of the university.

The name change was formally introduced at Eastern's Benefactors' Appreciation Evening, which celebrates the generosity of EWU's friends and donors.

Powers came to Eastern in 1954, to teach psychology, and spent countless hours in the old Hargreaves Library, which has since been restored into the reading room, which now bears his name. Powers retired from EWU in 1993, and he and his wife Myrtle - a longtime teacher in Cheney - have continued to contribute to student success through endowments and by supporting several scholarships.

"Eastern has provided me with an opportunity to develop and grow as a professional," said Powers, who is proud to leave an everlasting impact on Eastern and its students. "No other charitable organization could ever provide a more meaningful opportunity to me as EWU. I feel grateful to reciprocate in some way."
