Nominated for acting scholarships...The Things hey Carried, acting, scholarship, theatre

CHENEY, Wash. - Three Eastern Washington University Theatre students involved in the original stage adaption of The Things They Carried will take their skills to a regional competition, after being nominated for acting scholarships for their work in the award-winning production.

The powerful enactment of Tim O'Brien's masterpiece was greeted by enthusiastic crowds at the University Theatre during two separate runs. As a result, students Howard Holcomb, Chaillee Fraint and Justin Schlabach will compete for an Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship at a regional event in Fort Collins, Colo., Feb. 13-17.

The Irene Ryan Scholarships provide recognition, honor and financial assistance to outstanding student performers wishing to pursue further education. During the Irene Ryan Competition, each of the EWU students will compete for the regional prize by presenting two short scenes and a monologue. The winner will join the other regional representatives for an all-expenses paid trip to the national festival in Washington, D.C. in April.

While attending the regional competition in Colorado, the three Eastern students will see plays and attend workshops with nationally-recognized theatre and film artists.

O'Brien's novel, a finalist for both the 1990 Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award, follows an American platoon through their tour of duty in Vietnam. The stage adaptation The Things They Carried, written by Jeff Sanders, a lecturer in EWU's Theatre Program, brought the book to life through a series of potent vignettes. Assistant Professor Sara Goff directed the play, which included a cast of mostly EWU students. Sold-out shows greeted the first running of the powerful enactment, which was initially launched in conjunction with EWU's annual Get Lit! Festival, and it was bestowed a Spokie Award for "best drama" by The Pacific Northwest Inlander.
