TRiO Programs Celebrated

EWU Students and graduates...TRiO Day

CHENEY, Wash. - Students and graduates from Eastern Washington University's two TRiO programs, Student Support Services and McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement, will soon gather to celebrate National TRiO Day with two big events.

TRiO Day Celebration - Come and join the National TRiO Day celebration starting at 2 p.m., Wednesday, April 10, in the Walter and Myrtle Powers Reading Room on the 2nd floor of Hargreaves Hall. Alumni and current students who have benefited from TRiO programs will be on hand to share their success stories and showcase their current endeavors. The showcase will include Academic Success Center's Service Learning Experience in Moab, research from McNair Scholars, and TRiO Student Service Project. Also expected to attend are EWU President Rodolfo Arévalo, EWU faculty and staff, along with community supporters.

Community Outreach Event - EWU's TRiO programs and the EWU TRiO Club are sponsoring a clothing drive for the local Cheney Clothing Bank. The goal is to "Fill Up The Mall" through collection of clothing between March 11-April 10. On April 10 from 11a.m.-1p.m., the TRiO Club will host a party on the campus mall where all of the clothes collected will be displayed. The event will include live DJ music and a Thrift Store Photo Booth. If you have clean, reusable clothes you would like to donate, there will be boxes available throughout EWU's Cheney campus. Clothing may also be brought to the April 10 event. Highly requested items include new, unused socks and undergarments. The Cheney Clothing Bank provides all its clothing to consumers free of charge.

What is TRiO? - TRiO includes eight different Federal outreach and student service programs designed to identify and provide services for low-income, first generation, and individuals with disabilities. The purpose of these programs is to assist students with their progression through the academic pipeline, from middle school to post baccalaureate degrees. To date there are nearly 2,900 funded projects nationwide.

"Eastern's TRiO programs are the lifelines to the university for many of our first-generation, low-income students," said Ruth Galm, executive director of Grant and Research Development at EWU. "These programs support students' academic development as well as help them overcome challenges they face in seeking financial aid and balancing school with family."

TRiO Student Support Services - The TRiO Student Support Services (SSS) project has been on the Eastern campus since 1977, and has served thousands of students. EWU's project focuses on academic support in the areas of reading, writing, math and effective college study strategies. In 2011-12 TRiO SSS served 333 participants, of those, 245 or 74 percent were low-income and 1st generation. Annually, EWU's SSS project's retention (89 percent), six-year graduation (51 percent) and good academic standing (95 percent) rates are higher than the overall institutional averages.

TRiO Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program - Named for astronaut and Challenger Space Shuttle crew member Ronald E. McNair, TRiO's Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program was funded by Congress in 1989 to provide research opportunities and other services that prepare underrepresented students to pursue doctoral degrees. Since EWU's McNair program began in 1995, 12 Eastern TRiO McNair Scholars have earned PhD's, 93 have earned master's degrees, and more than 60 are currently enrolled in graduate programs throughout the country.

TRiO McNair Scholar, Jose A. Mendez, current sociology and criminal justice undergraduate at Eastern Washington University credits TRiO for inspiring him to combine academics with community engagement. "As an underrepresented minority, TRiO McNair has not only supported me by providing research opportunities and seminars, but also has helped me to seek out opportunities at Eastern to support student success. TRiO McNair has also provided an understanding of how to be well engaged within academia so that my sociology research at the doctoral level will benefit the success of the next generation of underrepresented students."

Dr. Torres García, current Director of EWU's TRiO Ronald E. McNair Program believes, "That TRiO changes lives, it changed mine. I am a product of these programs, a walking testimony of their successful work."
