Graduate Record Exam (GRE)

GREGraduate Record Exam, GRE, fee reduction waiver,

The Graduate Record Exam (GRE) is for graduate school applicants what the ACT/SAT is for undergraduate college applicants. It is a standardized test designed by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) to measure analytical and critical thinking skills and used by graduate schools to assess a student's academic potential. There are two separate tests: the GRE General Aptitude test and the GRE Advanced Subject test. The General Test measures verbal, quantitative (math), and analytical writing abilities. The verbal and quantitative sections are scored on a 200-800 point scale; the analytical writing section is scored on a score of 0-6.

FEE REDUCTION WAIVERS: Financial aid provides fee reduction waivers to eligible students. To procure a waiver, you will need to contact office to make certain you're eligible and, if eligible, complete a request and send it to ETS. Once you receive your voucher from ETS, you are able to register for the test. Additionally, ETS provides ten fee reduction waivers to McNair per year. These vouchers must be utilized; accordingly, talk to the McNair staff to determine whether there are any left before obtaining a voucher on your own through financial aid.

The Subject Tests measure knowledge and understanding of a specific subject area. Subject tests are available in the following areas: Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Economics, Revised Education, Engineering, Geology, History, Literature in English, Mathematics, Music, Physics, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology. Only some schools require the Subject test for admission, so check your prospective graduate school's requirements before registering to take the subject test.

The McNair program will provide a series of GRE preparatory sessions. You will need additional study time on your own and in smaller groups (at times provided by facilitators). The McNair program has computerized preparation software and GRE preparatory books will be supplied to you. These programs and books can supplement your studying process. Please return these books when you have completed the test process.

When you take the GRE General or Subject test, have the name of your prospective graduate schools with you. Your scores can be automatically sent to four schools of your choice, plus one will be automatically sent to the institution you presently attend for no additional fee. To send your scores later you will be charged an additional fee. Be prepared and you will save money.

To register for the General GRE Test: Call the Sylvan Learning Center to make an appointment: 8536 N Wall, (509) 467-8715 or consult the ETS website at http://www.ets.org. As of summer 2011, the general test costs $185.00 without the fee reduction waiver.

To register for a GRE Subject Test: Submit registration information directly to ETS, either by completing and returning the envelope in the center of the GRE registration materials or registering on line at the ETS website using a credit card. The subject test costs $140.00 without the fee reduction waiver. The ETS web site has extensive resources to practices for this test, please make sure you allocate time to do so.
