Abstract: A comparison of the Expression of a Chaoborus - induced phenotypic Plasticity in Daphnia among Ten Natural Populations

Predators influence the morphology, distribution and the life history of their prey species. In an attempt to better understand the ecology of predator induced phenotypic plasticities, a comparison of the expression of Chaoborus spp. (Diptera) induced neckteeth among ten pond populations of Daphnia pulex (Cladocera) was conducted. Additionally, we collected pond water from each of the ten ponds and tested the inducibility of the water using a single clone of D. pulex in a reaction norm bioassay. Observations indicate the expression of neckteeth in the natural populations was positively correlated with Chaoborus density, and negatively correlated with Daphnia density. Interestingly, there was no significant relationship in the expression of the Chaoborus- induced form between our pond water bioassays and the natural Daphnia populations.
