Abstract: Association of an Attitude of Gratitude with the Recollection of Positive and Negative Life Events

Mentor: Dr. Philip Watkins, Psychology

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a memory bias in terms of the recollection of positive and negative life events is associated with an individual's attitude of gratitude. We predicted that grateful people would show a more positive recall bias of events from their lives than ungrateful people. Sixty-six students participated in the study in a group format. The results showed that grateful people recalled statistically significant more positive events from their lives than ungrateful people. Thus, being grateful about one's life might help one to recall more positive experiences from one's life. As a result, the grateful person might benefit from subjective well being.
