Abstract: The Digital Divide & Single Parents

Mentor: Dr.Patricia Chantrill and Dr.Elizabeth Kissling, Department of Communications

The digital divide, the gap between those who have access to the Internet and those who do not, is a well-documented, often debated phenomenon. One may read about this trend in magazines, newspapers or ironically on the Internet. Most often discussion surrounding the digital divide examines racial and economic groups, however one segment that is not widely mentioned is single parents. The effect of the Internet on single parents is particularly important because this group is constantly growing and changing. In this project I will explore how the digital divide impacts single parents as a distinctive group of under-represented people.
