Abstract: Washington State's Current Educational Systemic Failure

Washington State is currently facing an achievement gap within its educational system. The achievement gap is currently between Racially Ethnic and Caucasian students. The gap is more evident in heavily populated Chicano/Mexicano communities and therefore will be the focus of this paper. The achievement gap has not improved within the last ten years, especially for the Chicano/Mexicano students, nor has there been a solution implemented to the ongoing problem. What is occurring in Chicano/Mexicano communities is an increase in high school dropout rates, which results in an increase in unemployment in Washington State. Without an education, many students fall into the low socio economic group and struggle to provide for themselves and their families. Poverty and lack of education is an on going vicious cycle that has been allowed to occur and reoccur in the Chicano/Mexicano communities. Many Chicano/Mexicano students are unconscious of their situation and are therefore non-determined for change.
This paper first begins with a literature review of works on the educational status of Latino's in the Northwest. The second section discusses the issues affecting students in Washington State, such as the educational achievement gap between Chicano/Mexicano and Non-Hispanic White students, increasing dropout rates of Chicano/Mexicano students, the high percentage of unemployment among Chicano/Mexicano adults and Chicano/Mexicano's low socio-economic status. Finally, it concludes with a set of new proposals as a potential solution.
