Abstract: The Economic Impact of Native American Casinos

Mentor: Dr. Tom Trulove, Economics

In order for Native American tribes to battle poverty they need to participate more fully in the economy. Most reservation lands are geographically remote from the mainstream economy making manufacturing, industrial or commercial activity difficult to impossible as sources of economic activity. Not all tribes are blessed with sufficient natural resources to sustain viable industries dependent on natural resources. Consequently, many tribes find that their best, and sometimes only, way to participate in the economy is by operating casinos.
