Liliya Rudneva

Liliya attributes her academic success thus far to her mentor, Dr. Munson, family and boyfriend. Dr. Munson has been a supportive and consistant figure in Liliya's academic life througout the last few years, helping her navigate undergraduate work as well as preparations for graudate school. Her family and boyfriend have been strong supporters of her educational aspirations and goals throughout her bachelor's degree as well.

Liliya Rudneva was born in Taganrog, Russia and immigrated to the United States in 1997. She is a first generation student currently studying counseling, educational and developmental psychology at Eastern Washington University. Her current research focuses on the effects of girls' relationship with their fathers during childhood and their choice of intimate partners in adult life, looking specifically at unhealthy parental relationships and the link between choice of abusive partners. After completing her bachelors, she plans to pursue a PhD in counseling psychology focusing on family and marital counseling.

2011 TRiO McNair Research Internship- Impact of a girl's relationship with her father during her childhood on her choice of intimate partners in her adult life
Rudneva, Liliya, (Dorothy Munson), Counseling and Educational Psychology, Eastern Washington University, Washington

In an effort to understand intimate partner violence, research has mainly focused on the effects of witnessing or experiencing parental abuse in childhood. In the literature this is the most accepted explanation for transmission of violence to the next generation. There has been less attention given to the effects of a girl's relationship with her father in childhood and the subsequent impact on her choice of intimate partners later in life. Over the past three decades, research has revealed several trends that have been identified concerning the effects of unhealthy paternal relations with daughters. These include daughters' development of impulsive aggressive personality styles, accepting attitudes toward aggression, learned gender and sex roles, and inadequate communication patterns. The purpose of this comprehensive literature review is to more fully explore and identify factors that are essential to understanding this socially and developmentally significant topic.
