Lateasha Lewis was born and raised in Tacoma Washington. She grew up in a single-parent household where sometimes things were tough. Although she lived with her mother she has an extremely close relationship with her father.  She has one older sister and a nephew she adores. She also has an extended family where she has two sisters and one niece. Lateasha is a first generational student and is passionate and determined to help children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Lateasha is double majoring in Children's Studies and Sociology. She is very appreciative and thankful to have the opportunity to attend Eastern Washington University. God has truly blessed her in a number of different ways. After earning her undergraduate degree, Lateasha plans to pursue graduate degree that will help children and their families. Her ultimate goal is to open a center to assist low-income families. She is determined to reach all of her goals and knows that with hard work and God's help anything is possible.

TRiO McNair Research Internship:___________________________________________________________

Keep Reaching for More Success: Engaging Middle School Youth Academically (2012)
The research focuses on youth engagement in community support programs as an important contributor to student success.  Findings are based on interviews with twelve youth services organizations that demonstrate success in improving youth participants' academic performance in the Spokane Public School District.  Interviews were transcribed and coded for themes around engagement, risk factors, school and community collaborations, parent involvement, transitions, and role models.  This paper examines the ways that successful youth organizations engage youth through 1) supporting their academics, 2) cultivating healthy relationships, either directly or indirectly, and 3) building self-esteem and empowerment.  Our discussion highlights the ways in which a student's sense of competency may be more important than grades in demonstrating success. This research has been funded in part by Priority Spokane, the Inland Northwest Community Foundation, the Harriet Cheney Cowles Foundation, and Empire Health Foundation. 

A Data Analysis: Bullying from Current Middle School Students Perspective (2012)

The purpose of this study is to help bring awareness about how youth understand bullying. Findings are based on 253 surveys from current middle school students. Each survey was analyzed using SPSS software. There are three things that where looked at 1) Where students are most likely to get bullied 2) Who is most likely to be bullied and 3) What students want adults to do in combating bullying behavior. Disturbingly, more than half of the participants in this study reporting either being bullied or witnessing bullying.
