Jessica Ochoa

Jessica Rocio Ochoa Alcala "Selah, Washington is the small farming town I grew up in, and I am the second oldest of six children. I graduated from Davis High School in Yakima in 2010 as an Achiever's Scholar with the College Success Foundation, while also taking classes at the Yakima Valley Technical Institute to become a certified nurse assistant. This was when my spark of interest in the medical field began.  In the fall of my freshman year  at EWU, it was my advisor Juan Vazquez who was a part of the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) at the Chicano Education Program who was the first individual who truly encouraged me to reach for higher academic goals. He saw a potential in me that I still hadn't discovered.

Since then, I began taking advantage in learning more about the medical field and complete an internship the summer after my freshman year at Sea Mar Community Health Center in Seattle, WA. It was through this experience where I knew and was determined to become a medical doctor.  In the summer of 2013, I began as working as an intern in the Sleep and Performance Research Center, Medical Sciences and Program in Neuroscience for Dr. Christopher J. Davis and Dr. James Krueger in partnership with the WAMMI Medical Research Center at the Washington State University River point campus.

Lastly, I became very passionate about medical and cultural anthropology, and how many different aspects pertaining to culture and medicine can affect one's health, depending on the circumstances in which you are born into. To conclude, by surrounding myself with encouraging individuals, and through the assistance and support of the McNair program, I have set an ambitious goal of attaining a dual degree of an M.D, and a Ph.D in Anthropology."
