English Scholarships for Undergraduate Students

Scholarships in the English Departmentscholarships, grants, English

A variety of scholarship opportunities are available to undergraduate students with outstanding academic achievement and, for certain scholarships, financial need. The English Department offers four scholarships specifically for majors: The Ralph Tieje Scholarship, The Harold and Verna Kleiner Scholarship, The Colton-Huston Scholarship, and the Patrick McManus Journalism Scholarship.  These awards are for upcoming juniors or seniors, depending on the scholarship, with a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.  One condition of the scholarships is that the student recipient will remain enrolled at EWU full-time as an English major during the period of award.

The Ralph Tieje Scholarship is for upcoming seniors and is open to all English majors (Literary Studies, English Secondary Education, Creative Writing, Journalism, Humanities, Technical Communication).  In 2010, the amount awarded was $1350; in 2011, $1325; in 2012, $1200; in 2013, $1325; and in 2014, $1300.

The Harold and Verna Kleiner Scholarship is for upcoming seniors and is open to all English majors (Literary Studies, English Secondary Education, Creative Writing, Journalism, Humanities, Technical Communication).  In addition to academic merit, the Kleiner Scholarship considers financial need.  In 2010, the amount awarded was $375; in 2011, $350; in 2012, $475; in 2013, $345; and in 2014, $480.

The Colton-Huston Scholarship is awarded specifically to an upcoming senior who is a female English major in either Literary Studies or English Secondary Education.  In addition to academic merit, the Colton-Huston Scholarship considers financial need. The scholarship is based upon current tuition rates.  Based on tuition, the scholarship is awarded per quarter.  Once awarded, this scholarship can be renewed for a total of three consecutive quarters.  Thus, the total amount awarded in 2013 and 2014 was $7372.

The Patrick McManus Journalism Scholarship is awarded either to an upcoming junior or senior majoring in Journalism. New in 2014, it awarded $465.

The English Department awards scholarships in conjunction with the EWU General Scholarship Fund.  Please go to the EWU General Scholarship Fund website at www.ewu.edu/scholarships to file out the application form.  We have centralized this part of the scholarship process because by filling out this one on-line application form, in addition to being eligible for any of the scholarships specific to the English Department, you will automatically be considered for any other EWU scholarships that you qualify for.  In 2014-2015, English majors received an additional 14 scholarships!  We sincerely hope this extra step will make more scholarship money available to you as you complete your degree at EWU.

In addition to the application form filled out on-line, you will need to apply directly to the English Department Scholarship Committee.  Please identify clearly within your letter of application which scholarship-or scholarships-you are applying for.  As long as all of the criteria for each respective scholarship is met, you may apply for more than one.  Here are the requirements for each:

The Ralph Tieje Scholarship:  A letter of application.  An updated résumé.  A statement of 1000 words (maximum) that explains your interest in English.  Two (no more, no less) confidential letters of recommendation from members of EWU's faculty.

The Harold and Verna Kleiner Scholarship:  A letter of application.  An updated résumé.  A statement of 1000 words (maximum) that explains your interest in English.  A completed copy of your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file at EWU's Financial Aid Office.  Two (no more, no less) confidential letters of recommendation from members of EWU's faculty.

The Colton-Huston Scholarship:  A letter of application that identifies and discusses the following items: the applicant's area of interest and reasons for interest, the courses to be taken, why the degree is desired, the role of the degree in the applicant's future, and why the scholarship is needed.  A 2,000- to 3,000-word critical essay written for one of the applicant's junior-level literature classes that provides clear evidence that the applicant is both a good writer and a thoughtful and critical reader.  A completed copy of your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file at EWU's Financial Aid Office.  A minimum of two recent letters of recommendation from English professors that address the applicant's reasoning, writing, and reading abilities and the candidate's ability to successfully complete the degree.  (If no applicant meets the criteria, no award will be granted.)

The Patrick McManus Journalism Scholarship: A letter of application. An updated résumé. A statement of 1000 words (maximum) that explains your interest in journalism.

The deadline for all materials is February 15, 2015.  Please be aware that if you wish your financial need to be considered, you will need to complete the FAFSA, available at EWU's Financial Aid Office, two weeks prior to this deadline to allow time for the form to be processed.

Please mail application materials to: Dr. Beth Torgerson, Chair English Department Scholarship Committee, Department of English, Patterson 211R, Eastern Washington University, Cheney, WA  99004.
