BA/BAE in French

There are 2 bachelors degree types in the French program, each with 2 options:

French is:

  • The second most frequently taught language in the world, after English, and the second language of the Internet
  • The only language other than English spoken on five continents
  • An official language in 33 countries around the world
  • The official working language, along with English, of the United Nations, the European Community and many other international organizations.

The French Program offers:

  • Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Bachelor of Arts in Education (BAE)
  • Academic minors for the BA and BAE

Note: Students who want to have a second endorsement in a minor field will require more than 12 quarters to complete the BAE.

Note: Students must pass the oral and written ACTFL proficiency tests before beginning student teaching.

Emphases / Concentrations:

  • 1. Speak and comprehend at the appropriate level of proficiency in the target language;
  • 2. Read and write at the appropriate level of proficiency in the target language;
  • 3. Use the target language in a holistic manner, i.e. with explicit or implicit connections to the culture and social norms of the target language;
  • 4. Accurately employ terminology and concepts associated with the linguistics, culture, arts, and literature of the language under study;
  • 5. Apply critical thinking: Examine contemporary political, economic, and social issues in the target language with sensitivity to cultural differences.
