Our department remains committed to continuous strengthening and expansion of our undergraduate and graduate programs. Our graduates are prepared to become productive and contributing members of a modern day workforce. The faculty continue to build upon their scholarship records, while effectively integrating teaching, research and service. We invite you to inquire about the exciting degrees that we have to offer.

<h5>The Department of Physical Education, Health and Recreation houses the following major programs:</h5> <p><strong><a href="Documents/CALE/PEHR/Athletic Training/FactSheet-ATTR.pdf" title="FACT SHEET ATTR">ATHLETIC TRAINING:</a> </strong>This major is designed for students who are interested in becoming certified athletic trainers. The major is designed to prepare students to sit for the Board of Certification's national examination and to work competently in the field of athletic training and sports medicine.</p> <p><strong><a href="Documents/CALE/PEHR/Community Health/FactSheet-COMMHLTH.pdf" title="FACT SHEET COMMUNITY HEALTH">COMMUNITY HEALTH:</a> </strong>Community health majors are professionals who design, conduct and evaluate activities that help improve the health of all people. The majors are prepared to sit for the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing examination.</p> <p><strong><a href="Documents/CALE/PEHR/Ex Science/FactSheet-EXSCI.pdf" title="FACT SHEET EXERCISE SCIENCE">EXERCISE SCIENCE:</a> </strong>This major is designed for those students who are not interested in teaching but are interested in fitness and wellness management. The program and course work prepares students to pursue certification from organizations such as ACSM, NSCA and ACE. These certifications are widely accepted in the fitness industry.</p> <p><strong><a href="Documents/CALE/PEHR/HealthFit/FactSheet-HealthFit.pdf" title="FACT SHEET HEALTH FITNESS">HEALTH AND FITNESS:</a> </strong>The Health and Fitness degree is designed for those students pursuing a teaching endorsement. Students will become certified to teach K-12 within both the health and fitness areas.</p> <p><strong><a href="Documents/CALE/PEHR/Recreation Mgmt/FactSheet-RECMGMT.pdf" title="FACT SHEET REC MGMT">RECREATION:</a> </strong>The nationally accredited recreation program focuses on a profession that offers many challenging and varied forms of employment. The curriculum is designed to aid students in developing a philosophical and practical knowledge of recreation and leisure services. Students may choose from a comprehensive curriculum in one of three majors: outdoor recreation, recreation management and therapeutic recreation, as well as miniors in recreation management, aquatics and a certificate in challenge course management.</p><p><strong>Athletic Training:</strong> Opportunities for employment exist in but are not limited to, athletic training in high schools, colleges and professional and non-professional athletic teams, sports medicine clinics, hospitals, health clubs and corporate fitness programs.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Community Health:</strong>&nbsp;This degree prepares the student to begin working in community and/or public health programs. Areas of possible employment are international, national, state and local health departments/agencies (World Health Organization, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Washington State Health Department, Spokane Regional Health District, etc.), non-profit agencies (American Heart Association, American Red Cross, American Cancer Society, etc.), health care organizations (hospitals, clinics), and worksite wellness programs (University Student wellness centers, in-house wellness programs, contracted wellness companies, etc.).</p> <p><strong>Exercise Science:</strong> Graduates are prepared to work in various settings as managers of fitness programs.&nbsp; The options include corporate fitness, commercial fitness clubs, YMCA-YWCA or other non-commercial programs, retirement centers or hospital rehabilitation programs in cardiac rehabilitation, respiratory therapy and diabetes support. The program prepares students to pursue advanced degrees in exercise physiology, biomechanics, motor control and learning, cardiac rehabilitation and adult fitness, as well as profesisonal programs such as physical and occupational therapy and chiropractic.</p> <p><strong>Health and Fitness:</strong> Students will become certified to teach K-12 within both the health and fitness (physical education) areas.</p> <p><strong>Recreation:</strong> Trained recreation leaders are regularly hired in positions with cities, communities, youth agencies, parks, resorts, outfitting companies, convention centers, rehabilitation medicine, correction facilities, the armed forces and much more.</p>
