Spring 2013 Newsletter
The beginning of Spring quarter brings lots of activities for faculty and students. Hopefully, you'll be able to participate in most, if not all activities as they occur.
We began the quarter with the Celebration of Entrepreneurship that occurred the first week of the quarter honoring Rod Schneidmiller of Sterling International, maker of the Rescue insect traps. Many of you have seen the yellow wasp traps if not used them at your homes, and other insect-related products. Mr. Schneidmiller had a very enlightening presentation on the company's history, his current business model and his goals for the future of the company. Attendance exceeded 125 participants and included student teams making their business plan presentations from EWU, Whitworth, Gonzaga, Community Colleges of Spokane, and new this year, students from area high schools including Mead High School, Riverpoint Academy, and Lewis and Clark High School.
April 16 - The CBPA is host to the EWU Foundation Board quarterly meeting in the Phase 1 Building. Dean Duchatelet will be making a presentation on the college and students have been identified to conduct tours of the building and speak to the board.
April 19 - Power of the Regional Food Economy 2013 Conference. Teresa Brum coordinated this one-day event held in Phase 1.
April 26 - Business Plan Competition at Whitworth University. Three student teams from EWU will be presenting their plans to the judges. A reception and awards ceremony will begin at 4:30 pm in the Weyerhaeuser Building.
May 8 - Case Method Teaching Seminar: The Art and Craft of Discussion Leadership will be held in Phase 1, room 228. There are still openings for this all-day seminar. Attendees experience the seminar from the perspective of both instructor and student. First, as an instructor, by learning new techniques for orchestrating classroom discussion, blackboard management, and discussion plan preparation. Second, as a student, by preparing and discussing cases about both teaching and traditional business issues. May 16-17 - the Pacific Northwest Economic Conference will be held at the Davenport Hotel in Spokane. EWU's Economics Department is this year's host with Dave Bunting coordinating the event and Kelley Cullen serving as conference chair. For more details on this event, please contact Kelley at firstname.lastname@example.org.
May 16 - The next Leadership Seminar sponsored by the Accounting Advisory Board will be held at 6 pm in the Phase 1 Auditorium in Spokane. Sue Horton, President of Wheatland Bank is the featured speaker for this event. Faculty are asked to encourage students to attend this seminar. More details will be available soon.
May 17 - TEL Workshop on Turnitin (anti-plagiarism software). Lunch is at noon in Phase 1, room 118 with the workshop session at 12:30 in room 343. RSVPs are required for the lunch by contacting Sharlene Bozanich (email@example.com) or call 828-1226 by May 15.
May 17 - Beta Alpha Psi Spring Banquet will be held at the Lincoln Center at 4:30 pm. Faculty are encouraged to attend this annual event at 1316 N. Lincoln St. For more information on the event and costs, contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
June 7 - CBPA Annual Golf Classic at the Creek at Qualchan. Registration begins at 11 am with shot-gun start at 12:30 pm. One of the things that committee members hear on a regular basis is that players would like to see more CBPA faculty at the tournament. Even if you don't play, faculty could be at several of the holes just to chit-chat or catch up on alums and let players know what is going on at the College. Players and volunteers are needed, so if you would like to participate, please contact Sharlene Bozanich at email@example.com or call 828-1226.
June 13 - CBPA Awards Ceremony. The annual college awards ceremony will be held on June 13 at 4:30 pm in the Phase 1 Auditorium. Students receiving recognition will include Beta Gamma Sigma, MPA Honors, Urban & Regional Planning Awards, Health Services Administration and Economics honor society induction and honors, as well as other honors and awards. Also recognized will be faculty who received University Merit Awards. Departments are reminded to send names of students and their honors/awards to Debbie Jennings by April 22 for inclusion in the University Commencement Book.
June 14 - End-of-the-Year and Retirement Celebration. Several faculty have announced their retirement plans and have been awarded faculty emeritus status. A luncheon will be held in Phase 1, 2nd floor Open Space (WSU side) at 12 pm. Faculty who will be recognized include: Joe Dowd, Professor Emeritus of Accounting; Bill Kelley, Professor Emeritus of Urban and Regional Planning; Tom Trulove, Professor Emeritus of Economics; and Pam Weigand, Professor Emeritus of Business Communications. Also announcing her retirement is Sharlene Bozanich, the College's Budget & Event Coordinator, who will retire this summer. The departure of this group will definitely leave a hole in the college that will be difficult to fill. If there are others who elect to retire this year, you will be notified.
June 15 - Commencement. Again this year, both masters and baccalaureate students will be combined into one ceremony and all of the colleges will be divided into two separate programs. The College of Business & Public Administration will join with the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and Social Work at the morning ceremony. All faculty and students will participate in the Grande Marche from the campus mall to Roos Stadium. More detailed information on the logistics of the graduation ceremony that include line-up directions and seating directions will be available in May. However, this year, the seating of the graduates and faculty will be a bit different from last year in order to utilize the new large screen that the university purchased.
The students will be crossing the stage from both sides. Faculty will be needed at the ramps on both sides of the stage to greet students as they descend from the stage and help them return to their seats.
The traditional barbecue will be held following the morning ceremony.

Damon Aiken was a recipient of the National Marketing Management Association's 2013 Teaching Excellence Award in Chicago, Illinois.
Jeff Culver was elected to serve on the Board of Directors for the Honor Point Military and Aerospace Museum, January 2013.
Bill Kelley has been notified that the grant, "Transportation Planning Tri-County Region," has been funded by the Tri-County Economic Development for $10,350.
Eric Dunaway, Economics, was one of 40 people selected to attend Russell Investments 1st Annual Careers in Investment Management Workshop in Seattle, WA. Russell Investments is a global investment management firm that manages $159.1 billion in physical securities and $66.5 billion in derivatives.
Matthew Birch, Ryne Rohla and Benita Walker had papers accepted for presentation at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. Their academic advisor is Kelley Cullen.

Susanna Kang, president of the student chapter of Alpha Kappa Psi, received a national award as the Innovator of the Year at the Principled Business Leadership Institute Conference in Reno, Nevada in February 2013. The chapter also received two additional awards for their achievements. Susanna is also a full-time employee in Student Employment on campus. The student chapter advisor is Nancy Birch.
