Planning Programs Annual Scholarships

The Planning Programs are part of the College annual awards program to recognize students for work accomplished during their academic careers. The Scholarships are:

The Washington Chapter APA Scholarship for an undergraduate or graduate student: $3,000

The Washington Chapter of the American Planning Association has established scholarships for Accredited Programs in Urban Planning. Started in the 1980s, this tradition reflects the strong encouragement and support for higher education in professional planning programs, and a commitment to students in pursuing a degree in planning.

The Frank Schadegg Memorial Scholarship: $1,000

Dr. Frank Schadegg was an exceptional Professor of Geography at Eastern Washington University who was fascinated with action research and field applications of research in geography and planning across the Inland Northwest. He was a strong force in creating and promoting planning in rural areas, and was responsible for the formation of the Planning Association of Washington. Professor Schadegg was the founder of urban and regional planning at EWU. Our Urban Planning degree (Bachelors established in 1968) and Masters of Urban and Regional Planning MURP (established in 1978) were the product of Frank's keen interest in teaching and learning in the field. An endowment for this scholarship was established by planners, alumni and friends of Frank Schadegg to continue the tradition of applied planning and field research among students.

King Cole Scholarship: $1,000

Mr. King Cole was perhaps the most influential planner in the history of Spokane, as the leader and organizer for economic revitalization, and particularly as the person most responsible for the 1974 World's Fair in Spokane. Redevelopment and revitalization still shapes a successful and evolving downtown that builds on our legacies of preserving the natural environment and the unique historic forms of our cities. Although never working as a planner for the City, Mr. Cole worked tirelessly through business and non-profit organizations to lead and form Spokane as a 20th Century City. This scholarship is provided by a generous endowment to EWU from the Cole family to support an undergraduate student in planning.
