Tell us about some of your internship/volunteer experiences?
During college I felt God had blessed me in many ways, and for that I, I felt it was best to give back as much as I could. Some of the smaller ways I was able to do that was by joining the business fraternity Alpha Kappa Psi and we had adopted a mile stretch of the Hwy 904, we had done multiple clothing and food drives, and volunteered our time at the Special Olympics. Others that were outside of the fraternity included habitat for humanities, and handing out gift cards and food to the homeless. I had gone on a few mission trips to Mexico to build houses down there for 7-10 days each. I enjoyed giving back.
My Internship experience had included an internship with Warner Bros. in Burbank, CA (non-paid) which financially was very difficult yet very rewarding and worth it when it came to networking and job experience. Another internship was with the Spokane Home Builders Association as a marketing intern.
How long was your internship?
I was at Warner Bros. for 10 weeks during the summer of 2009 and at Spokane Home Builders Association for about 9 months during the 2009-2010 academic school year.
What were your job duties?
To sum up WB, I analyzed placements of WB properties through associate retailers. I created and updated marketing sales decks (power point presentations) and coordinated with internal resources to finalize sales decks. I assisted with the strategic planning and found marketing opportunities with the assigned division of consumer products and found periodical research both electronic and print. I was there for 10 weeks doing anything and everything that needed to be done. I worked as part of a team in researching and developing, analyzing, and presenting financial plans and supplier analysis to become cost effective and efficient. I used Microsoft Excel and Power Point a lot. I did performance analysis on suppliers, distributors, and licensors of WB products, and identified opportunities for improvement both internally and externally for the WBCP Global Publishing group.
For SHBA, I created Fall Festival Home Show presentations and organized marketing research. I played around with their social media networking tools and helped with competitive analysis and data entry using Microsoft Office.
What were some of the steps you took to find that internship?
I called around to everyone I knew that worked and asked if anyone knew of an open internship for the summer, my aunt told me about Warner Bros and I went through the internship application process along with 5,000 others and I got the position. I got the SHBA internship going into the community and being social. I ended up talking with the marketing director of a company and got the internship.
Over time, were there things you did personally to help you prepare for that internship?
Honestly, I didn't have a clue what to expect, having never worked in that type of working environment. I studied hard, researched the company, chatted with people in the company to best prepare myself knowledge wise and went in willing to learn and with a ready to work type of attitude.
Got any personal advice for students who may be a bit nervous about stepping into the larger world of work, internships or volunteering?
Get started NOW! Meet people and look into the career you are pursuing and do more than just go to school. Get involved and be proactive about job searching. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL YOU GRADUATE.
I choose to follow God. I don't know where I am going or what is ahead but I know it will be worth it.
