Chertok Dean’s Honor Student and Faculty Awards Reception 2011
June 10th the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and Social Work celebrated liberal arts education in the Social Sciences and Human Services and how it enriches our minds and our lives. We paused to honor those who have fully engaged their education with openness, zeal and a thirst for knowledge. We honored those who have achieved academic honors, those who played a central part in their success and those who have given so generously of their time and resources to bring out the best in our students, our faculty and our university.
The winner of this years Dean's Excellence Award in Service was Dr. Pui Yan Lam, a newly promoted Professor of Sociology and Chair of the Sociology/Justice Studies department.
The Dean's Excellence Award in Service to the College is awarded to a faculty or staff member who has gone above and beyond the call in service to the college in the past year. They work incredibly hard and do it for the good of the college and their departments and the university. The winner receives a cash award of $500 and Dean Shield's eternal gratitude.
Pui Yan not only Chairs her department with competency, efficiency and finesse, but she leads efforts to help make this university a better and more welcoming place for minority students and faculty. She is one of the founders of EWU Mosaic, a social support group for faculty from diverse racial and cultural backgrounds. She is a member of the planning committee for the first of its kind event, "Weaving the Threads: An evening of Women's Empowerment." The planning committee brought together women from EWU and the community with female students of color for a night of mentoring and fellowship.
Pui Yan serves as the advisor to the International Exchange Living and Learning Community and she has served on the Board of Trustee's Diversity Initiative grant committee. She is a forward thinking leader who had the brilliant idea to work with development to bring alums from her department in to speak in her courses in order to build bridges with alums and "friend-raise" for the department. She consistently represents her department at First Step student orientations and Open houses. She is an outstanding ambassador for her department and for the university. She generally takes on any reasonable task asked of her and sees it as challenge and not a burden. The college is indebted to her for all these efforts that go above and beyond the call of her job description.
