Students of Color Symposium

Every year during summer quarter, Eastern Washington University's Africana Studies Program partnered with Spokane's Martin Luther King, Jr. Family Outreach Center and the EWU Office of Admissions to bring 20 teen volunteers to Cheney for a campus visit. The "Students of Color Symposium" was created to provide an opportunity to foster relationships between EWU and the wider Cheney-Spokane Community of color, give exposure to the Africana Studies Program and to simultaneously build student success, diversity, and inclusiveness. In addition, this partnership helped to further develop current EWU student leaders of color in hopes of attracting more students of color to the EWU community.

Four of EWU's Student Ambassadors planned the agenda for the two-day visit, which included an overnight stay, delicious campus food, and an introduction to planning for their college experience; everything from academic, to financial aid, to diversity on campus, and supportive resources for students of color.

This is a video from summer 2013 that captures the successful experience, both for the high school students and the EWU student ambassadors, who had the opportunity to exercise their leadership, public speaking, and organization skills.
