Forming Your Graduate Degree Committee

When you have completed at least 15 graduate credits in the program, you should begin to think about forming your graduate Degree Committee. The committee is formed to arrange, conduct, and appraise you through the graduate comprehensive examination. Satisfactory completion of the comprehensive exam is required to graduate.

It is up to you to approach and ask the professor if he or she is willing to be a member of your Graduate Degree Committee. Graduate degree committees are composed of three members, one acting as the Chair. The Chair of the graduate committee is a faculty member from your primary area of research. Another member, ideally from a different department, is chosen to represent the broader academic aspects of your research. Your committee Chair and second member are based on your preference. If you are undecided on the members of your Graduate Degree Committee, you are encouraged to meet with the Director for assistance. Again, it is up to you to find and approach the members of our committee.

The third member is a representative of the Graduate Affairs Council, which governs graduate policies and programs. The council representative is selected from a department outside the student's primary academic area and is appointed to the committee by the Dean of Graduate Studies.

After the committee is established, all members are officially notified of the committee membership by the Graduate Studies Office.
