What is History Day?

History Day is a nationally acclaimed history education program that challenges middle school and high school students to become historians, explorers, investigators and leaders. History Day makes history come alive through active student learning and educator professional development.

Students may enter one of five categories of competition- papers, exhibits, performances, documentaries, and websites-in the junior (grades 6 through 8) and senior (grades 9 through 12) divisions. They can work as individuals or in groups in every category except paper.

Students may participate at their local school or may enter their regional contest. The Eastern Region contest is held at Eastern Washington University and is sponsored by the College of Social and Behavior Science and Social Work and the Department of History. Students may continue on to State History Day if they are in the top 3 of their category which is sponorsed by the Washington State Historical Society, Tacoma Washington. (www.washingtonhistory.org/historyday).  If students win their divisions at State they may continue on to the National History Day in Landover, Maryland. (www.nhd.org)
