Earn a Certificate in Public History!

The History Department at Eastern Washington University offers an undergraduate Certificate in Public History to prepare students for the many applied history careers outside of teaching. Public historians work for museums, historic homes, libraries, archives, state and national parks; and for local, state, and federal governmental agencies. Public historians may apply their knowledge of the past to film, television, or web production; they may work as freelance writers or in cultural resource management. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2008-09 Edition, "Employment of archivists, curators, and museum technicians is expected to increase 18 percent over the 2006-16 decade, faster than the average for all occupations." The Public History Certificate will prepare students for these exciting career opportunities with a combination of practical coursework and field experiences.

Acceptance to the certificate program requires that the student have at least a 3.0Interpreter at Colonial Williamsburg cumulative GPA and the approval of the certificate coordinator. The student must not earn less than a 3.0 in any course required for the certificate, or less than 3.3 cumulatively for certificate courses. At least 21 credits for the certificate must be completed at EWU.

The Certificate Program

At the heart of the program are the required core classes (History 110 and 398), a professional internship, and assembling a portfolio of the public history projects you will have done for your courses. In addition students will take 15 credits of relevant coursework beyond the courses they are applying to the requirements for their B.A., chosen in consultation with the certificate coordinator. Students can develop a certificate program to meet their career aspirations, be it archives, government museum work, or other public history career paths.

For more information contact the certificate coordinator Dr. Larry Cebula at 509-359-6079 or by email at LarryCebula@gmail.com.
