Social Studies Advising
This page is designed to help you:
1. Learn about what social studies majors can do for employment
2. Meet the Social Studies Department's requirements for the Social Studies BAE
The Social Studies Program
The Social Studies program is composed of various social science disciplines designed to give students the necessary background and and intellectual tools, which are key to understanding culture and history. Please view the Social Studies Curriculum Guide for more information.
What Social Studies Majors Can Do For Employment
Teaching Full Time/Substitute Teaching/Resource Room Aide
Please choose teaching because it is what you really want to do, and not because you think that is all you can do with your Social Studies degree.
If you want to teach history in secondary school, you can get there by majoring either in History or in Social Studies Education.
In general, it is probably better to major in Social Studies Education if you:
Want to begin teaching immediately after getting your BAE
Are unsure about whether or not you want to get a Master's degree
The Social Studies Education Advisor is Professor Kathleen Huttenmaier.
It is probably better to major in History if you:
Are unsure about whether or not teaching is right for you
Know that you want to pursue a Masters in Teaching
The Advisor for History Majors is Professor Laura Hodgman .
If you want to teach at the college level, you are better off with a History BA. Before deciding this is your preferred option, please read "The Graduate Degree in History" The road to becoming a history professor is long and difficult. For most students, getting an MA in History is preferable to pursuing a PhD.

Progress Towards Meeting Your Requirements
You can check your progress toward meeting the requirements for the Social Studies BAE by checking your SOAR audit. Access SOAR through your EagleNet account. If you notice a discrepancy, please inform the Social Studies advisor, being as specific as you can about the classes you think are not tracking correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the 30-credit minor and a 60 add-on endorsement?
The 30-credit minor is usually added to fill a minor endorsement with another academic major, such as English. the 60-credit add-on endorsement is for those who have already completed their teaching certificate and are adding another major area of endorsement.
I took foreign language in high school. Why doesn't SOAR register that information?
If you are a transfer student, EWU probably never received your high school transcripts. Please have your high school transcripts sent to Records and Registration.
How can I have a hold removed from my record?
If it is an advising hold, the quickest way to have it removed is to email the History advisor.
Why can't I register for Social Studies 390/490?
EagleNet will block your registration if you don't have the correct prerequisites. You must have taken Education 200, 303 and Ed. 341. Social Studies 390 must be completed before you do your student teaching. If either Social Studies 390 or Social Studies 490 is to be waved, you must have permission of the Director of the Social Studies Education Program, Professor Kathleen Huttenmaier.
