Alumni and Development

Alumni and DevelopmentAlumni, Funding, Initiatives, Campaign, Development, big futures

Eastern Washington University remains dedicated to providing a student-centered learning environment that promotes academic excellence and opportunity. At the College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (CSTEM), our primary mission is to educate individuals to meet today's scientific and professional challenges and tomorrow's opportunities. But accomplishing that mission requires your participation. The university is focusing on four key areas where Eastern will build its big future and where you can direct your support.

Student Success

With enrollment now at more than 12,500, it's imperative student success remains our primary focus. EWU is dedicated to maintaining an environment where students will thrive. By creating greater access to student support services, Eastern is providing the necessary resources to support all students so they can earn their degree.

  • Dean's Excellence Fund - Gifts to this fund support new initiatives and areas of greatest need.
  • Annual and Endowed Scholarships - Both undergraduate and graduate, especially scholarships for women in STEM fields.
  • Endowed Professorships/Chairs - Distinguished professorships/chairs allow EWU to recruit outstanding faculty that provide positions like these with supplemental funding for teaching and research activities.
  • Computing and Engineering Sciences Living Learning Community Scholarships - Supplemental scholarships for students in the CES LLC, housed in the new residence hall.
  • Departmental Program Support - Help create excellence in one of our specific programs: Biology, Chemistry/Biochemistry & Physics, Computer Science, Engineering and Design, Environmental Science, Geology and Mathematics.

Community Engagement

Our CSTEM faculty are highly engaged with the community. Below are just a sampling of thse relationships:

  • Presentations in the following schools - Mt. Spokane High School, Mead High School, University High School, Odessa High School, Central Valley High School, Coeur d'Alene High School, Colville High School, Cheney High School, River Academy, Betz Elementary, River Day School, and Riverpoint Academy
  • Regular collaborations with - Spokane Indian Community, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Spokane Libraries, Bloomsday, Spokane Astronomical Society, Youth Charity Auction, SeaPerch, Satori, Inland Northwest Land/Trust Conservancy and Rocky Moutain Geological Society.
  • First Lego League -

Institution of Innovation

The door is open for EWU to expand its research opportunities, from the Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge on the outskirts of campus, to the archaeological dig in Cyprus led by one of our distinguished professors.

  • Alternative Energy Education Site - Creating an experiential and education center for alternative energy and sustainability, inviting the greater community to explore the most efficient methods of producing and harnessing the energy around us.
  • Project STEaM - Supporting a wide variety of community engagement efforts related to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. STEM represents the disciplines and areas of study that will demand the highest growth in student enrollment in order to support the future demands of a society becoming increasingly dependent on advanced technology and knowledge.
  • FIRST Robotics - Hosting FIRST Robotics competitions in partnership with GSI and FIRST Washington. High school students must solve a real-world challenge by research, critical thinking, construction, teamwork and imagination. FIRST Robotics combines the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology.
  • Science Olympiad - Hosting rigorous interscholastic competitions for junior high and high school students where future scientists enter with individual and team events that are prepared throughout the year.
  • Biomedical Research and Education Center - Creating a center employing nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, currently unavailable in Spokane-area universities.

Visibility

State-of-the-art, environmentally-friendly buildings create an atmosphere where students excel. Having quality classroom space gives Eastern more flexibility to provide high-demand professional degree offerings. On the heels of the renovation of historic Hargreaves Hall, Patterson Hall is the latest academic building to get a major facelift. Additionally, a new residence hall will give generations of students a top-notch living facility. And an investment in athletic facilities will help our student athletes who compete in NCAA Division I sports.

  • Academic Facilities - New science center and major renovation of the current science building planned.
  • Equipment - Maintenance and replacement of scientific equipment for CSTEM.
