Bertha Finely BrisboisBertha Finley Brisbois Scholarship

The Bertha Finley Brisbois Memorial Scholarship was established at Eastern Washington University by the children, grandchildren and other relatives of Bertha Finley. Many of whom are Eastern Washington alumni.

The scholarship, created with an endowment of $5,000, is dedicated to students who graduate from Columbia High School Wellpinit High School, Springdale and Reardan.  To be eligible to receive the scholarship, the students must be Spokane Tribal Members and  be majoring in the fields of study associated in Eastern Washington University's College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.  The scholarship is intended to provide full tuition and book scholarships.

We welcome your participation in this opportunity to be part of the legacy of Bertha Finley Brisbois.  Gifts of any size are appreciated and will be deposited into a fund managed by the EWU Foundation with the purpose of creating an endowed scholarship in Bertha's name to support science, health and engineering students. After the minimum endowment level is reached, annual scholarships will be awarded.

About Bertha Finley Brisbois

Bertha Finely was born on April 20 to Annie Lafleur and John Finely, in what is now known as the West End of the Spokane Indian Reservation.   Her father, John, was a Native Flathead from western Montana, and her mother, Annie, was a Native Spokane. Bertha Finley married Nazaire Richard "Dick" Brisbois and they had seven children and lived predominately on the West End of the Reservation.

Bertha's early education came from a school specifically for Spokane Indian children at Fort Spokane.  Bertha loved to learn and was committed to helping Native Americans go to college.  Her passion for learning and her dedication to educate her own and other native children led her to being responsible for bringing the first two public schools to the Spokane Indian Tribe, which were established in the 1930s.  Prior to the establishment of these schools, Spokane Tribe children were sent away to school in Oregon and Bertha was determined to have her children educated on the reservation.
