Security

Protect your information!  You play a very important role in your own security.
  • Use the "Change PIN"  (personal identification number) option to change your PIN, and always keep your PIN to yourself.
  • Always use the "Logout" function to end your session.
  • Be aware of your surroundings, just as you would when using an ATM.
  • Do not leave your workstation unattended.  If you must leave, logout.

Several internal security measures are also used to protect your valuable information (see below).  Please take full advantage of them by personally protecting your own information.

Encryption

The EagleNET server uses Secure Socket Layer Protocol (SSL) to authenticate the server and provide you with an encrypted connection.  Encryption ensures that your information cannot be intercepted and deciphered when in transit between you and the EagleNET Web server.  Consequently, you will need to use an SSL capable browser to use this service.  Both Netscape and Internet Explorer versions 4.0 or greater are SSL capable browsers (see Recommended Browsers).

Timeouts

Timeouts make sure that a login session that is left unattended will not persist indefinitely.  In other words, if you walk away from a machine while working on your information, it will not stay connected all night or be available when another person starts to use the machine.

Setting the length of a time out requires a balance between safety and usability.  Too short and the service may be more secure, but not a lot of fun to use.  Too long and you run a greater risk of unfriendly opportunists changing your information or using it for other purposes.

We have initially set the session timeout at 15 minutes.  After you have logged in, if you have not interacted with the EagleNET server in 15 minutes, you will have to login again and begin a new session.  Over the coming months we will be monitoring the effectiveness of this timeout setting.  We may decide to adjust it up or down, looking for the best balance between safety and usability.

Cookies

The EagleNET Web server requires the use of temporary (non-persistent) cookies.  These cookies have no information about you, and do not include your student identification number or PIN.  Because the cookies are non-persistent, they are not stored on your disk drive and they expire when you logout of EagleNET, or your session times out (see Timeouts).  These cookies are only sent to, and understandable by, the EagleNET Web server and therefore cannot be used by anyone for any other purpose.
