Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some Frequently Asked Questions regarding Epic
What is EPIC Adventures?
EPIC is the Eastern Washington University outdoor program. As a part of Student Life, EPIC is here to give Eastern students the opportunity to try some new and adventurous things outside of the classroom.
What kind of activities does EPIC do?
In short, backpacking, camping, canoeing, kayaking (flatwater & whitewater), whitewater rafting, rock climbing, ice climbing, mountaineering, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, downhill skiing, snowboarding, biking. If it's human powered and in the outdoors, we probably do it.
How can I join EPIC?
You can't. It's nothing personal, we're just not a club, so you can't "join." Simply sign up for whatever trips, classes or events that you want to take part in. If you want to sign up for a bunch, check out our annual pass. If even this doesn't satisfy you, see our employment page if you just need to "join" EPIC.
What if I've never tried it before?
Almost all of our activities are set up for everyone from complete newbs to experienced folks. Most of the time, all of the people on an EPIC trip are trying the activity for the first or second time (even waterfall ice climbing). We are here so that Eastern students can try new things. So... it's ok to be nervous... sign up anyway.
What does it cost?
Well, that depends on the trip. EPIC is sponsored by the ASEWU, so our trip price reflect only the price of travel, food, and small miscellaneous expenses. You can find our prices on the calendar link or on our Trips page. Our prices rock. Really. Check around.
Who can sign up for an EPIC trip?
EPIC is here for Eastern students. But...EPIC trips are open to anyone over the age of 18. For exceptions to the age thing, give us a call and we'll fill you in.
Will going on EPIC trips improve my dating prospects?
Maybe. Probably. That's not why we're here, but we can't rule out the possibility that going on an EPIC trip will make you more awesome.
Where did the name come from, and btw why is it in all caps?
EPIC is in all caps because it is an acronym: Experiential Programs Inspiring Confidence. Adventures denotes that we will participate in or seek out adventurous activities and experiences. The word epic has its own meaning, but we tend to try to avoid having too big of an epic while we are out there doing our thing.
Is it safe?
We'll answer this yes-or-no question with the following: risk management is our highest priority. We recently had our risk management practices audited by Adventure Safety International and we were the first university outdoor program to meet their standards. That being said, the sports we offer do have risks involved, and we can't eliminate every risk.
Will going on EPIC trips improve my GPA?
Yes (what other answer could we give... I mean, come on, your parents might be reading this). But seriously, it might. Students who are involved in extracurricular activities tend to stay in school and do better than students who just go to class.
Who leads the trips?
Students, for the most part. Almost all trips are planned and led by student trip leaders who have gone through a rigorous field training process, first aid training, van driver training and other skills training depending on the type of trip. On trips involving climbing or whitewater travel, a professional staff with advanced technical training is also present.
What do I need to bring?
Yourself. Maybe a friend. Oh, and clothes. For most trips, we provide all the equipment you need to take part in the activity. For instance, on a whitewater rafting trip, you can show up in a swimsuit and we have pretty much everything else you need. Before every trip, we'll give you a detailed packing list, so you'll know what to bring.
What is the meaning of life?
The answer is here.
