John Hodgen's book is a remarkable achievement, with poem after poem facing the relentlessness of the world and delivering life to us with clarity and an art so deft as to seem invisible. But the art is there and brings something new to poetry, which I am delighted to greet with warmth and enthusiasm.

-Vern Rutsala, author of The Mystery of Lost Shoes

Bread Without Sorrow, John Hodgen’s second volume of poetry, earned him the Balcones Poetry Prize in 2002. He has been the recipient of numerous other awards, including the 2005 Foley Poetry Prize, the 2005 Ruth Stone Poetry Prize, the Grolier Prize, an Arvon Foundation Award, the Yankee Magazine Award for Poetry, and the 2000 Massachusetts Cultural Commission Artist Foundation Grant in Poetry. His first collection, In My Father’s House, won the 1993 Bluestem Award and was published by Emporia State University’s Bluestem Press. A longtime resident of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, he teaches English and creative writing at Assumption College, from which he holds an MA, and at Mount Wachusett Community College.

Praise for Bread Without Sorrow

"In My Father's House is simply one of the most powerful books of poems I have read in a long, long time. [Hodgen] celebrates our humanity as he looks, unblinking, at the misery of the world with intensity, integrity, and compassion. Some of these poems are absolutely haunting."

- Jim Daniels, winner of the 2006 Blue Lynx Prize for Poetry
