EUCLID PARK

A dream has weighed on your chest so long
you cannot speak,
transforming instead from shadow to shadow
near the duck-pond in the park,
where sunlight glitters and gathers
and sometimes forms a swan.

The tall eucalypti wave
above the shadeless, acrid city,
breathless, lithe, like whores in Babylong
whose odors rose to hungry suns;
oiled and glossily they bend by the pool,
touching and troubling its brilliant water.

Jeff Walker was born in Portland, Oregon on November 11, 1949, and graduated from Portland State University. In 1973, he traveled to Europe, later living briefly in New England in 1974. He is a teacher of English as a Second Language.
