Balancing Acts
Robin Seyfried

Poetry
120 Pages
ISBN:

Paper: $13.95 $5.00

Balancing Acts, Robin Seyfried's debut book of poems, describes the high-wire act of being a wife, a mother, and a poet in a culture which devalues all three. Her work covers a wide range of moods and manners, from light to serious, from the lyrical to the satirical. It explores the failures and fulfillments of love, often in a fairytale setting. There are poems concerning the physics and metaphysics of flight, based on her own experiences as a private pilot, which convey both precise observation and insight.

A Northwest writer, Robin Seyfried's poems have appeared in many journals. She was editor of Poetry Northwest from 1978-1997 and is currently editing a fortieth-anniversary anthology of the magazine.

Praise for Balancing Acts

"These poems are surprising not only in the ways that poems of any new, authentic talent heard and presented with its own clarity and cadence, are surprising. Besides the sharp presence of their language, they unfold with the surprise of good stories-stories of the poet's own finds out what the balancing act are, step by step. It is a daring, generous first book."

—W.S.Merwin..........

"In the language of timeless imagery, Seyfried weaves the dark and light sides of love ... The details are sensual and direct, a voice full of wit and charm that keeps the reader 'somehow landing' listening to 'the music the life' of these fine poems."
—Colleen McElroy..........

"Robin Seyfried's bright, ironic view lights a varied country of social comments, unexpected musical interlude, sudden heartbreak. The effect is powerful; you will like these intricate, intelligent poems."

—Diana O'Hehir
