Arrow

There's an axis that runs through
my father and me and my son--

no--an arrow
whose sharp trajectory
none of us has escaped

This isn't target practice
it's the real thing--

the long face, slope of the nose
freckled skin and
in the marrow bone
a gift for depression

It might have been a bullet
that traveled through us

but we're lucky
to live in primitive times
At the end: feathers

Manic-depressive illness, also known as bipolar disorder, is estimated to affect several million Americans. Researchers and popular writers alike have argued that symptoms of the condition occur with disproportionate frequency among poets, a view that has tended to reinforce the stereotype of the mad artist. But, as poet and volume editor Thom Schramm points out, the stereotype exists in part because the existing literature has for the most part neglected the intricacies of individual lives. Living in Storms aims to bring nuance and depth to the popular imagination.

This collection represents the work of some eighty different poets whose work distinctively addresses the moods characteristic of manic-depression. The poems are arranged in eight sections, each representing a specific facet of the poetic portrayal of these shared experiences.

Praise for Living in Storms

"All the cycles, all the inexplicable euphorias, and all the self-nullifying despairs are here-but so are the brave and tentative recoveries from such states. The accomplishment of these poems is that they express, with dignity and grace, what Coleridge in his 'Dejection' ode called 'the eddying of [the] living soul'. And this is what poems are meant to do."
