"Seasons of Mangoes and Brainfire explodes into a multiple reflection on territories, cultures, flesh, and mind. This surefooted narrator seems compelled to know everything our worlds are made of, every stitch and seam of the song."

—Yusef Komunyakaa (Judge, Blue Lynx Prize, 1999)

Carolyne Wright has published eight volumes of poetry, a collection of essays, and three volumes of poetry in translation from Spanish and Bengali.  Her most recent collection is A Change of Maps (Lost Horse Press, 2006), finalist for the Idaho Prize and the Alice Fay di Castagnola Award.  She has received awards for her writing and translation from the Poetry Society of America, the New York Council on the Arts, Seattle Arts Commission, the Fulbright Commission, Indo-U. S. Subcommission, NEA and NEH; and she has been a Writing Fellow at the Bunting Institute of Radcliffe College, the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, the Millay Colony, Vermont Studio Center, and Yaddo.  She has taught at many colleges and universities, including Sweet Briar College, Emory University, the University of Wyoming, University of Miami, Oklahoma State University, The College of Wooster, and Cleveland State University.  Returning in 2005 to her native Seattle, she teaches for the Whidbey Writers Workshop MFA Program and the Richard Hugo House, and serves on the Board of Directors of the AWP.

Praise for Seasons of Mangoes and Brainfire

"Seasons of Mangoes and Brainfire is marked with deep, intimate emotions, telling details, and a swaying music that enriches its poetic content. Blending personal loss with political violence and cultural conflict, the book presents a coherent world shaped by the poet's mature sensibilities. I am very impressed by it."

Ha Jin

"In Seasons of Mangoes and Brainfire Carolyne Wright makes the exotic both familiar and necessary while somehow managing to make her own presence in this gorgeously imagined documentary of the human spirit equally compelling. Brilliantly seen. Passionately rendered. Here is the spirit of the international artist. Here is a book I couldn't put down."

—Roger Weingarten
