Fiction with Lynda Barry
Writing the Unthinkable
All day
$80 ($70 for students)
In the words of Lynda Barry:
Dear Future Workshop Participant,
I'm going to be teaching a simple way of writing I've been using for almost 30 years and the class is for anyone who:
a) has or can borrow a pen
b) has or can borrow a three ring binder and at least a hundred sheets
of loose leaf lined school paper (yes, they have to be loose leaf)
c) is interested in a way of writing that isn't a drag. As in how often
writing feels like towing a barge upstream with 900 heavy critics on
board. It's much much better once you figure out how to water ski
behind the writing instead of having to tote that barge! And this can
be done! Yes! With a simple method I've been using for nearly 30 years
which is not only good for writing but surprisingly good for the memory
as well. Will you be there? The speed boat will be ready!
Nonfiction/All-Genre with Natalie Kusz
Writing Ideas Don¹t Hide Under Rocks: Noticing Great Material in Your Own World
9-12
$65
Professional writers are often asked, "Where do you get your ideas," as
though great writing notions hide in secret vaults to which only
fiction writers, nonfiction writers, and poets have access codes.
In fact, so many potential subjects exist all around us‹lying about in
the streets‹that many writers wonder, "How will I ever find time for
them all?" This workshop is designed to give you the "eyes" to
recognize creative subjects in the world you already know, and to help
you identify provocative possibilities for written pieces. We
will discuss how to train yourself to recognize writing material when
you run across it, as well as identify some ways a particular idea
might be used differently in fiction, nonfiction, and poetry.
Bring writing materials and reading glasses, and prepare to tune up
your brain cells!
