Claire Rudolf Murphy has written thirteen notable books for children and young adults. Her newest book is the picture book I Am Sacajawea, I Am York: Our Journey West with Lewis and Clark. Upcoming projects include the picture book Children of Alcatraz: Stories from the Rock and a young adult novel set in the Alaskan gold rush at the turn of the century.
 
Her other books include her third novel Free Radical, named by Booklist magazine as one of 2002's best sports books for teens, and Gold Rush Winter, an early chapter book with Random House. The Prince and the Salmon People was reprinted by EWU Press. Her book Daughters of the Desert: Remarkable Stories from the Christian, Jewish and Muslim Traditions, co-written with four other Spokane writers, gave Claire the opportunity to dialog with women of different faith traditions.
 
Claire's 2001 book Gold Rush Dogs, co-written with Alaskan historian Jane Haigh, is the third in a series including Children of the Gold Rush, a 1999 American Booksellers Pick of the List and winner of the 2000 Willa Cather Award for best juvenile nonfiction book, and Gold Rush Women. Other nonfiction books include Friendship Across Arctic Waters, and A Child's Alaska, a Parents' Council selection.
 
Her novel To the Summit, was a 1992 New York Public Library Outstanding Book for the Teen Age, and Gold Star Sister was Children's Book of the Year. Her second picture book Caribou Girl has been made into an animated video.
 
Formerly a secondary language arts teacher, Claire and her family lived in Alaska for twenty-four years. She now resides in her hometown of Spokane where continues to write, visit schools and teach creative writing workshops. Her two children Conor and Megan and their friends have given Claire great insights into the world of teens today and the history of the American west continues to inspire Claire.
