| 120th Commencement in Eastern's 125th Anniversary Year | | June 2007 | | The 120th commencement ceremony at Eastern Washington University will be held Saturday,June 16, as the University honors degree recipients and their families. This year 2,292 students will receive their undergraduate degrees and 556 students will receive their graduate degrees. Sidney Kasuga, PhD, a professor of biology at Eastern, has been honored
with the Undergraduate Faculty of the Year Award and will be the commencement speaker at the baccalaureate ceremony. Mark Young, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Counseling, Educational and Developmental Psychology is the recipient of the Graduate
Faculty of the Year Award and will be the commencement speaker at the graduate ceremony. |
| Women's and Gender Studies Program at Eastern Washington University has First Graduation | | May 2007 | | Women and Gender Studies proudly announced the graduation of its first class of majors.The Women's and Gender Studies major was new at Eastern in the 2006-2007 academic year. The curriculum provides critical thinking skills and an understanding of women's diverse contributions to society. Women's and Gender Studies Programs at EWU are committed to realizing the equality of women and men in all areas of life so that our relationships - professional, personal and social - are characterized by the freedom and mutuality which can only occur among equals. |
| Eastern Faculty Member given Outstanding Planner Award | | May 2007 | | Eastern Washington University Professor William J. Kelley was given the Outstanding Planner award at the recent American Planning Association Conference in Philadelphia. Kelley was chosen by the Small Town and Rural Planning Division from multiple nominees around the country. He is a professor of Urban and Regional Planning with Eastern's
College of Business and Public Administration. In nominating Kelley for the award, former students and his colleagues acknowledged his 30 years of teaching. During that time, Kelley has made many contributions to small towns through projects like rural transit, scenic byways, comprehensive plans, tribal planning projects, watershed studies, infrastructure assessment and economic revitalization. |
| Student Research and Creative Works Symposium Celebrates 10 Years | | May 2007 | | The 10th annual Eastern Washington University Student Research & Creative Works Symposium showcased 242 undergraduate and graduate projects. This is the culmination of months of
student and faculty mentor preparation. The Symposium offers participating students the opportunity to present their research - be it creative writing, oral presentation or artistic display - in formal professional settings while giving the public the chance to see them shine.This year, student topics range from Increased Risk of Dental decay in
Endurance Athletes to an Ungulate Survey on the Colville Indian Reservation. Faculty members judge the students' presentation skills and winners receive cash prizes. |
| Eastern's Marketing Efforts are Award Winning | | May 2007 | | Eastern Washington University was honored with four prestigious awards from the Spokane Regional Marketing Communications Association at the recent "Spark Awards." The team from University Relations, which is part of University Advancement, was awarded the best
entry, or "Excellence Award" in three of the four categories entered. The EWU awards are as follows:

| Africana Education Program Celebrates Milestone | | May 2007 | | Eastern Washington University's Africana Education Program celebrated its 35th anniversary with a banquet. The keynote speaker for the event was John Harding, PhD, an associate professor of history at Kentucky University and Bowling Green. Harding previously taught Black Studies at EWU from 1984-1991 and was the first and only professor to obtain tenure through the program. |
| EWU 125th Birthday | | April 2007 | | Eastern Washington University celebrated its 125th birthday, as part of its 125th anniversary year, during the month of April. To commemorate the University's heritage in the region, several events were planned throughout the month, including Eastern's 125th Birthday Party at the Cheney Normal School Heritage Center on campus. It all started in 1882 with 200 students enrolling at the new Benjamin P. Cheney Academy, an institute for higher learning designed to serve the needs of the surrounding community. | Health and Fitness Majors Club Garners National Award | | April 2007 | | Eastern Washington University's Health and Fitness Majors Club has been recognized by ESPN and the National Association for Sport and Physical Education, or NASPE, for creating one of the top five programs in the country that helps kids become more active. This is the second straight year EWU has been selected among the top five schools for implementing a Play Your Way program. The Play Your Way program challenges colleges to design and implement fitness programs for kids seven to 12 years old and allows them opportunities to participate and design new games and activities. Such games include Super Target Bowling, which involves pizza boxes, tape, tennis balls and empty tennis ball containers.

| Historic Senior Hall Formal Dedication | | April 2007 | | Eastern Washington University's historic and remodeled Senior Hall, which re-opened its doors last spring, was formally dedicated during a grand opening ceremony this month. Senior Hall was originally built in 1920 and used as a dormitory for senior class women. On a July night 87 years ago, several hundred students and townspeople attended the first formal opening. Guests were treated to speeches, songs and a violin solo. Ice cream and wafers were served with the Senior Hall colors carried through in the pink and green ice cream. Senior Hall received building awards from ALSC Architects and national recognition.

| Rising Star Award | | February 2007 | | The Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) honored Eastern's own Dave
Sonntag, associate director of external relations, with a Rising Star award during the CASE District VIII conference in Boise on February 23. The Rising Star Award recognizes the accomplishments of new advancement professionals with three to five years of experience whose early success promises future leadership and achievement. Dave began
his tenure at Eastern in April 2004.

| National Soccer Coaches Association Honors EWU Goalkeeper | | December 2006 | | Eastern Washington University senior goalkeeper Tiera Como was honored academically by being named to the All-West Region third team by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Como, a graduate of East Valley High School out of Spokane, Wash., is majoring in mathematics education and has a 3.40 grade point average. The NSCAA/Adidas College Women Scholar All-West Region selects a first, second and a third team each year along with honorable mention. |
| New Dean is on the Case of the Missing Dinosaurs | | November 2006 | | Forgive Judd Case if he's not impressed with the harshness of the early Inland Northwest winter – he's seen far worse weather during his time hunting for dinosaur fossils in the frozen Antarctic wilderness. The trips to Antarctica have paid off for EWU's new dean of the College of Science, Health and Engineering, and on his last trip, he helped discover one of the most complete fossil skeletons of the marine-dwelling dinosaur, plesiosaurus. Case and his fossil-hunting partner, James Martin of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, unveiled the skeleton at the School of Mines and Technology's museum. The duo traveled to Washington, D.C., in December to officially announce the find at a National Science Foundation (NSF) event

| EWU Expands Agreements with Chinese Universities | | October 2006 | | Eastern Washington University expanded its participation in the Sino-American 1+2+1 Dual Degree initiative sponsored by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. Eastern is hosting seven Chinese exchange students from Chang'an University, Xi'an Shiyou University and Xi'an University of Science and Technology. The expansion of this program will help support Eastern's commitment to community engagement that benefits the University, the region and the world. |
| Eastern Helps Make Voting Accessible | | October 2006 | | The Eastern Washington University Center for Disability Studies and Universal Access, together with the Spokane County Elections Department, brought the AutoMARK ballot system to campus. AutoMARK is a ballot marking system designed to provide privacy and accessibility to voters who are blind, vision-impaired or have a disability or condition that would make it difficult or impossible to mark a ballot in the usual way. In addition, it provides language assistance to voters who have reading difficulties. |
| Record Enrollment at Eastern | | September 2006 | | Eastern Washington University continued a six-year trend with its 19th consecutive quarter of growth. EWU welcomed 9,999 students to classes to start the 2006-07 academic year. That number is 131 students higher than last year's fall quarter enrollment. The 9,999 student headcount number translates to 9,637 full-time equivalent (FTE) state-supported students. The total number of FTE students, when self-support students (those not supported by state funds) are figured in, is 10,213.

| Kinne is First Female to Have Second Term as Student Body President | | August 2006 | | Alicia Kinne, a 2003 graduate of Poly High School in Riverside, Calif., is representing the students of Eastern Washington University as their Associated Students of EWU (ASEWU) president for the second year in a row. Kinne, the daughter of Lori and Dean Kinne of Spokane, is the first woman in school history to serve two terms as ASEWU president. In high school, she participated in Young Republicans, Interact, band and track. At Eastern, she's been active in Campus Crusade and Alpha Xi Delta sorority. |
| Eastern Has Powerful Economic Impact on Region | | August 2006 | | An analysis completed by the Eastern Washington University Institute for Public Policy and Economic Analysis estimates EWU has an impact of more than $300 million on the Spokane County economy. The analysis showed that every state dollar spent on behalf of Eastern increased Spokane County economic output by $5.9. The total analyzed economic impact of EWU on Spokane County in 2004 was estimated at $306.5. Spending by EWU students and for University operations and capital projects amounted to $174 million. The University accounted for 3,266 jobs, which generated $94 million in personal incomes.

| Construction Begins: New Recreation Center Coming in 2008 | | August 2006 | | The Board of Trustees awarded to Lydig Construction a contract for construction of the new $26.3 million University Recreation Center. The new center will house the EWU Body Shop fitness facility, a 200-meter indoor running track, an indoor climbing wall, a gymnasium for basketball and volleyball, a 20,000 square foot multi-purpose floor, locker rooms, food service and offices for the University's recreation programs. The 117,699 square foot facility, funded through a partnership between the University and its students, will expand existing recreational opportunities on campus and add new activities such as ice skating and rock wall climbing. Opening is scheduled for 2008.

| EWU Ranks 26th in American Indians Earning Master's Degrees | | July 2006 | | The July 13, 2006, publication of Diverse Issues in Higher Education "Top 100 Graduate Degree Producers" shows EWU increasing 129 percent in self-identified American Indians obtaining master's degrees (all disciplines combined) from 2003-2004 to 2004-2005 -- going from seven to 16. EWU ranks 26th among U.S. universities in total number of master's degrees awarded to American Indians. |
| Nakahara Earns Bruno Walter Memorial Award in Conducting | | July 2006 | | EWU Director of Orchestras Morihiko Nakahara has earned the Bruno Walter Memorial Award in conducting. The Bruno Walter Foundation awarded a $10,000 grant to the Spokane Symphony, for which Nakahara serves as associate conductor. For the 2006-07 season, Nakahara will be known for holding the Bruno Walter Associate Conductor Chair. | EWU Team Competes in Annual Dragon Boat Races | | July 2006 | | A Dragon Boat Race team for EWU will train and row for the first time in the Annual Dragon Boat Festival to benefit the Spokane Parks Foundation. A team of 25 employees and friends participate in Spokane's only community festival that takes place on the Spokane River.

| 23 Participants in the Washington Achievers Program Graduate | | June 2006 | | The Washington Achievers Program provides scholarships, mentoring and support for talented low-income students who are motivated to attend college. The students come from 16 high schools from throughout the state of Washington, with those schools having high percentages of low-income students. With an enrollment of 172 Washington Achievers, Eastern serves more students in the program than any other higher education institution in the state other than the University of Washington.

| Eastern and Foundation Northwest Establish Partnership | | June 2006 | | Eastern Washington University's Institute for Public Policy and Economic Analysis received $108,000 in grant money for the development of a model partnership with Foundation Northwest to measure the condition of the Spokane community. The 18-month grant from Foundation Northwest will allow EWU to expand the Community Indicators Initiative. The combined effort will develop a road map to assess whether Spokane is on the right path to sustaining a vibrant, healthy community in the future.

| Jazz 89.5 KEWU-FM Earns Fifth National Award Nomination | | May 2006 | | For the fifth consecutive year, KEWU-FM has been nominated for Best Small Market Jazz Station by JazzWeek Magazine. Program Manager Beth Farriss was nominated for Best Small Market Jazz Programmer second time. |
| LED sign - A Gift from STCU | | May 2006 | | Eastern Washington University, in partnership with Spokane Teachers Credit Union (STCU), unveiled an LED Message Center that will serve as a beacon of connectivity for the campus and the community. Strategically located on Washington Street in Cheney, the 18-foot, full-color sign can be seen from Woodward Field, residence halls and campus streets. |
| Eastern on the West Side of Washington | | April 2006 | | John Shovic, a cybersecurity expert and professor at Eastern Washington University, says half of all home wireless networks are vulnerable to hackers or bandwidth freeloaders because the wireless signals have not been encrypted. KOMO 4 News in Seattle went on a "wardrive" with Shovic to see if Shovic's prediction was true. They drove through a random middle class neighborhood in Bellevue to see what they could find. Albright will sign copies of her new book, "The Mighty and The Almighty: Reflections on America, God and World Affairs." |
| Eastern Reaches Television Agreement for Eagle Sports | | April 2006 | | Eagle football and men's basketball games and coaches shows will be televised by Belo Media Group Spokane (BMGS), with KSKN TV Channel 22 serving as primary carrier. The Eastern Washington University Athletic Department reached an agreement in principle with Belo Media Group Spokane to produce and televise Eagle football and men's basketball games in the 2006-07 and 2007-08 athletic seasons. |
| Dana Elder Awarded West Plains Chamber Educator of the Year | | February 2006 | | EWU Department of English Chair Dana Elder has been named the West Plains Chamber of Commerce Educator of the Year in Higher Education. Dr. Elder gained recognition for directing composition -- one of the largest programs on campus -- for more than a decade; serving as president of the faculty organization; serving as dean of students; forging lasting partnerships with community college and public school educators to bring students into national and regional organizations; and contributing to Eastern, the region and the world as an accomplished scholar. |
| Dr. Rodolfo Arevalo is Eastern's 25th President | | January 2006 | | Dr. Rodolfo Arevalo was named the 25th president of Eastern Washington University on Jan. 9, 2006. He begins his tenure April 1, 2006. He comes to Eastern after seven years as provost and vice president for Academic Affairs at The University of Texas-Pan American (UT-PA). In that position, he has been responsible for overall administrative leadership of the internal functioning of academic units within the university. He spent 18 years in the California State University system, as a faculty member, department chair, associate dean, graduate dean and associate vice president. Dr. Arevalo also served as provost and chief academic officer at Fort Hays State University. |
| Meyer, Kimble Repeat on The Sports Network All-America Team | | December 2005 | | At every turn in the 2005 season, the E2 passing combination of quarterback Erik Meyer and wide receiver Eric Kimble added a new milestone to their resumes. Meyer and Kimble became Eastern Washington University's first-ever repeat selections at their respective positions as NCAA Division I-AA All-America selections were announced by The Sports Network. |
| EWU President's Visit to China Nets Partnerships | | December 2005 | | A visit to China by Eastern Washington University Interim President Brian Levin-Stankevich resulted in a signed exchange agreement with Chang'an University, as well as preliminary agreements with Xi'an Shiyou University and Xi'an University of Science and Technology. Students from these institutions could be attending EWU as early as next fall. Levin-Stankevich and vice provost Earl Gibbons, who directs EWU's international and educational outreach programs, traveled to several cities in China as part of a 28-institution delegation seeking to expand educational partnerships with Chinese higher education institutions. The visit was part of the Sino-American Dual Degree initiative sponsored by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. |
| Fulbright Scholars at EWU and Beyond | | December 2005 | | EWU will host one of Russia's brightest English language scholars, Sergey Garagulya, as part of the 2005-06 Fulbright Scholar program. Garagulya, an associate professor in the Department of Foreign Languages at Belgorod Shukhov State Technological University, in Belgorod, Russia, is researching anthroponymic transformations in the English language environment of the American community. He is one of approximately 850 outstanding foreign faculty and professionals brought to the U.S. to teach and do research by the Fulbright Scholar program this year. The chair of Eastern Washington University's Psychology Department, Associate Professor Mahlon Dalley, was one of approximately 850 U.S. faculty and professionals awarded a 2005-06 Fulbright Scholar grant. Dalley's Fulbright Scholar grant will allow him to spend one year in residence at the University of Botswana in Gaborone, Botswana. Dalley's psychology lecturing and research abroad will be on cross-cultural attribution. |
| EWU Quarterback Erik Meyer Earns Payton Award | | December 2005 | | Eastern Washington University quarterback Erik Meyer was presented with the most prestigious award in NCAA Division I-AA Football -- the Walter Payton Award -- given annually to the top player in I-AA by The Sports Network. Meyer led Eastern to back-to-back Big Sky Conference championships and appearances in the I-AA playoffs. |
| EWU Receives $500,000 Grant from The Kresge Foundation | | November 2005 | | Eastern Washington University received a prestigious $500,000 challenge grant from The Kresge Foundation that will help outfit the new Computing and Engineering facility with vital equipment and ensure that equipment stays on the cutting edge. Eastern is one of only 154 organizations that have received grants from The Kresge Foundation so far this year. Eastern will use half of the grant money to purchase scientific equipment, with the other half seeding an endowment to replace and maintain the equipment in the school. The grant will be used as a challenge to donors to help the University build the endowment to at least $1.25 million. |
| Washington and Montana Governors Attend Governor's Cup Football Game, a First in 21 Years | | November 2005 | | The 2005 Governor’s Cup football game, featuring the Eastern Washington Eagles hosting the Montana State Bobcats, truly lived up to its name this year, as governors Christine Gregoire and Brian Schweitzer both attended the game at Woodward Field in Cheney. The Governor’s Cup game annually pits the EWU Eagles against one of the rivals from Montana, either the Bobcats or the University of Montana Grizzlies, whichever is playing on the road against the Eagles that year. |
| U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Visits EWU | | November 2005 | | U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns visited Eastern Washington University. The secretary's visit was part of a series of public Farm Bill forums being conducted throughout the nation to obtain input on agricultural and rural community federal policy. The 2002 Farm Bill (officially titled the Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002) authorizes many USDA programs, including farm income support, conservation and rural development programs. |
| EWU Continues Record Enrollment Streak | | October 2005 | | Marking 16 consecutive quarters of growth, Eastern Washington University welcomed 9,868 students to classes to start the 2005-06 academic year. That number is 93 students higher than last year's fall quarter enrollment. The student headcount number translates to 9,791 full-time equivalent (FTE) state-supported students. When self-support students (those not supported by state funds) are figured in, the official FTE student count is 10,285, up 194 from last year. |
| Computing and Engineering Building Official Dedication | | October 2005 | | Eastern Washington University officially dedicated its new Computing and Engineering Building on Wednesday, Oct. 19. Guided tours of the 93,242 square-foot, $26.2 million facility immediately followed a short ceremony. |
| Reliving History | | September 2005 | | The 90-year-old entry point to the Eastern Washington University campus officially served as the entry point for new Eastern students' academic journeys on Sunday, Sept. 18, as the University's new freshman class participated in "Pass Through the Pillars." More than 1,600 new EWU students assembled near the Herculean Pillars that stand at the intersection of College Avenue and Fifth Street in Cheney, and then passed through the pillared gateway and proceeded up the brick pathway onto campus, leading up to historic Showalter Hall. Faculty, staff, alumni and upperclassmen lined the pathway, cheering on the new students as they passed by. |
| Eastern Washington University Press Receives Prestigious Recognition | | August 2005 | | Eastern Washington University Press has been accepted as an affiliate member of the Association of American University Presses (AAUP). EWU Press joins 125 other distinguished scholarly presses, including those from University of

| New Higher Education Coordinating Board Member is One of Eastern's Own | | July 2005 | | Lance Kissler, a graduate student at Eastern Washington University, was appointed as the student representative on the Washington State Higher Education Coordinating (HEC) Board by Gov. Christine Gregoire. In his role as the student member of the HEC Board, Kissler will represent the interests of the state's public higher education students. Kissler was chosen for the position out of several applicants from public universities across the state. He is the third student chosen to serve on the board since the student board position was established in 2003.

| KEWU Named Small Market Jazz Station of the Year by Jazzweek Magazine | | July 2005 | | Capping two decades as the Spokane region's premier jazz music source, Eastern Washington University's radio station KEWU was recognized for its excellence by being named Small Market Jazz Station of the Year by JazzWeek magazine. Completing the sweep, KEWU programmer Elizabeth Farriss was named Jazz Programmer of the Year. Farriss, a 2005 graduate of Eastern's electronic media and film program, has served as KEWU's programming director since June 2004. She attended the annual JazzWeek summit in Syracuse, NY, where she received her award. Her trip was paid for by a fellowship from Heads Up, a division of Telarc Records.

| 140 EWU Student-Athletes Honored in 2004-05 | | June 2005 | | A total of 39 Eastern Washington University student-athletes have been honored on the Big Sky Conference All-Academic team for spring quarter 2005. The total includes 17 from the women's outdoor track and field team, 10 from men's outdoor track and field, five from women's golf, four from women's tennis and three men's tennis players. Including 55 student-athletes who were honored in the fall and 46 in the winter, a total 140 were honored in the 2004-05 school year. To qualify for the team, athletes must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and must also have participated in at least half of the team's competitions.

| EWU Receives Funding for Autism Center | | June 2005 | | Eastern Washington University's 138 Martin Hall will soon be home to the only regional preschool autism center on the east side of the state, thanks to an amendment to the operational budget for EWU that allocates $275,000 annually to contract Eastern and Sacred Heart Medical Center for launching the five-year pilot project. Financing for the project is the result of a bill proposed by Washington Sen. Lisa Brown (3rd Legislative District) to fund a center in eastern Washington for service and support of preschool children identified with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The new, inclusive preschool center will accommodate 12 children, ages 18 months to 6 years – six typically developing children and six who have been diagnosed with ASD. |
| EWU Graduates its Largest Class Ever and First Doctoral Candidates | | June 2005 | | A record 2,772 students were eligible to receive their undergraduate and graduate degrees from Eastern Washington University at commencement ceremonies on Saturday, June 11, at Woodward Stadium on the EWU campus in Cheney. The 2,167 eligible undergraduate students and 605 graduate students represent the largest graduating classes in Eastern’s history. The notable 26 percent increase in students eligible for master's degrees is partially a product of an outstanding 90 percent rate of master's candidates reaching their stated goal of graduating this year. One of the highlights of the day was the "hooding" of the University's first-ever doctoral candidates. The 34-student graduating group were charter members of Eastern's doctor of physical therapy program first offered three years ago. |
| Olympic Training Researcher Headlines Research & Creative Works Symposium | | May 2005 | | Dr. Jeni McNeal, vice chair, research, U.S. Elite Coaches Association for Women's Gymnastics, was the keynote speaker for Eastern Washington University's eighth annual Student Research & Creative Works Symposium. McNeal, a 1993 graduate of EWU's physical education program, is also a member of the Performance Enhancement Team for the U.S. Diving National Training Center. Her research focuses on performance aspects of acrobatic sports and involves regular collaboration with the U.S. Olympic Training Center. All five of the athletes she worked with at the diving center represented the U.S. diving team at the Olympic Games in Athens last summer. |
| EWU Music Professor Develops Music Algorithm Program | | May 2005 | | Eastern Washington University music theory and composition professor Jonathan Middleton and a group of EWU computer programming students recently developed a music algorithm program for use in music and math classrooms. The program converts strings of numbers into notes by running them through an algorithm that transforms the data into scales with varying pitches and ranges. The program runs on nearly any personal computer. |
| Tom Thompson Named EWU Entrepreneur of the Year | | May 2005 | | Eastern Washington University named C. Thomas Thompson, a nationally renowned restaurateur, its 2005 Entrepreneur of the Year. The award was presented at a breakfast event attended by 200 business, education and political leaders from throughout the Spokane area. The award was presented by the EWU College of Business and Public Administration's Center for Entrepreneurial Studies. |

| Academic Support Center Receives New Funding | | May 2005 | | Eastern's Academic Support Center, directed by Sally Burge, has received five years of new funding for the Student Support Services Program under the FY 2005 competition. The new $378,276 annual grant, which starts Sept. 1, 2005, begins Eastern's 29th consecutive year of support from this U.S. Department of Education program. Burge's proposal received perfect scores from each of the three reviewers who reviewed it. |
| Eastern's One-room Schoolhouse Celebrates 100th Birthday | | April 2005 | | The clock turned back to 1905 all over again as local elementary students took lessons in the one-room Jore Schoolhouse, now known as the Cheney Normal School Heritage Center on the Eastern Washington University campus in celebration of the schoolhouse's centennial. Students received a 1905 classroom experience – from reciting lessons from the recitation bench to avoiding the dunce cap. The public was invited to watch the young pupils experience a half-hour of what their counterparts a couple generations ago experienced every school day. |
| Bellevue Community College and Eastern Washington University Sign Agreement | | April 2005 | | The partnership of Bellevue Community College (BCC) and EWU responds directly to the state's need for greater educational capacity at the junior- and senior-year levels of higher education. The two schools formally committed to the creation of Eastern Washington University @ Bellevue, a university center on the BCC campus offering upper-division courses that lead to EWU bachelor's degrees. The agreement formalizes and expands a growing partnership between the two schools and promises the creation of additional "2+2" degrees on the BCC campus. In these "2+2" degrees, students will take the first two years of their programs as BCC students then complete their bachelor's degrees by taking junior- and senior-level classes under the auspices of EWU – but on the BCC campus. |

That makes 14 consecutive quarters of record enrollment at Eastern. The University's 2005 winter quarter full-time equivalent (FTE) student numbers also saw a similar increase, up 183 FTE students from winter 2004 -- 9,060 this year compared to 8,877 last year. |

| National Media Cover EWU-GU Dual Degree Program | | January 2005 | | Eastern Washington University's School of Social Work and Human Services and Gonzaga University School of Law have received national media attention for creating a four-year dual degree program in which students will receive both a law degree from Gonzaga and a master's degree in social work from EWU. USA Today and other national media have covered the initiative, called the Dual JD/MSW Degree Program, which will begin as a pilot program in fall 2005. The CCSA program supports beginning and established faculty at primarily undergraduate institutitons to explore new areas of science; make new discoveries that contribute to their discipline; initiate new research programs that can be sustained by other extramural funding sources and institutional support; involve undergraduate students in meaningful ways; and raise the quality of undergraduate ecucation in the classroom. |
| Eagles Have Most Selections on Big Sky All-Academic Team | | December 2004 | | A total of 55 EWU student-athletes have been honored on the Big Sky Conference All-Academic team for fall quarter 2004. The total includes 19 from football, 15 from women's soccer and seven each from volleyball, men's cross country and women's cross country. To qualify for the team, athletes must have at least a 3.20 accumulative GPA and must also have participated in at least half of the team's competitions. Eastern led the league in all but women's cross country. In the 2003-04 school year, 156 Eagle student-athletes were honored on Big Sky All-Academic teams. |

| Jeanne Small Receives National Science Foundation Appointment | | October 2004 | | Jeanne Small, a professor of chemistry/bio-chemistry at Eastern Washington University, has been appointed as a program director in the Division of Undergraduate Education at the National Science Foundation (NSF) in Arlington, Va. NSF employs scientists, engineers and educators on a rotational basis to further the agency's mission supporting science and engineering research and education. Small, who is on a two-year sabbatical leave from Eastern, received nationwide attention in 2001 when she was heading an Office of Naval Research project to develop equipment that detects airborne microbes such as anthrax that can be used in biological warfare and bioterrorism. A patent has since been issued for the device that was developed as a result of that research. |
| Spokane Arts Commission Award | | October 2004 | | The Visiting Artist Lecture Series, sponsored by Eastern Washington University, Spokane Falls Community College and Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture, was honored Oct. 25 with a Spokane Arts Commission Annual Arts Award for Arts in Education. | EWU to Offer Electrical Engineering Degree | | September 2004 | | Eastern Washington University will begin offering a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in fall 2005. Final approval to offer the degree came from the state's Higher Education Coordinating Board. Eastern is now the first and only one of the state's public comprehensive (regional) universities to be granted permission to offer the electrical engineering degree. Prior to new legislation in 2003, these programs had solely been the purview of the state's public research universities. |

| GRAND OPENING OF CHENEY NORMAL SCHOOL HERITAGE CENTER | | June 2004 | | Cheney Normal School Heritage Center (CNSHC), a one-room schoolhouse originally established in 1905 in the wilderness near Newport, Wash., is complete. The schoolhouse, originally named the Jore School, was relocated to the center of Eastern’s campus in August 2000 – directly across from the University’s Education Department, Williamson Hall. After four years of gathering community support and carefully refurbishing the small building, the schoolhouse will house an educational heritage center symbolizing Eastern’s historical significance as a teacher preparation institute. Scheduled tours will be offered to schoolchildren and the general public. |
| 2004 Alumni Awards | | June 2004 | | Greg Bever, publisher of Spokane’s Journal of Business, received Eastern Washington University’s Distinguished Alumnus Award. Bever, who has worked in the newspaper business for 38 years, attended Eastern 1968-69, leaving to pursue a newspaper career with The Spokesman-Review. He returned to Eastern and graduated in 1989 with a bachelor of arts degree. Community leader Lori Steiner received the Eastern Washington University Alumni Association’s Exceptional Service Award. The award, which honors individuals for their exceptional service to the University and/or their community, was presented for her many community activities, including (but in no way limited to) creation of Spokane Community Gardens, serving as volunteer program director of the New Horizons Orchestra, founding the Lilac City Symphony Orchestra and being a founding member of Simply Strings. EWU Commencement – Saturday, June 12 – will take place at the Veterans Arena adjacent to downtown Spokane Construction is beginning on a renovation and remodeling project at Eastern’s Woodward Field -- home of EWU football and track & field, and home of baccalaureate Commencement ceremonies – making the site unavailable for Commencement. The $1.6 million project will add a new press box (media center) and viewing suites and is part of an overall $3.3 million project which will expand the stadium from its present 7,500 seating capacity to 11,000. |
| ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING DEGREE COMING TO EWU | | May 2004 | | Eastern Washington University has been granted conditional approval to establish a four-year electrical engineering program beginning as early as fall 2005. The state’s Higher Education Coordinating Board (HECB), authorized the University to offer the bachelor of science degree program. This is the first time the HECB has given permission to a public comprehensive university to offer a baccalaureate in electrical engineering. “This is a significant step forward,” said Terry Byington, executive director of the American Electronics Association (AeA). “It will provide Washington’s citizens with the skills needed to compete for the jobs of the future. Not only will it increase the number of engineers, it has the potential for reaching students who might otherwise not be attracted to or able to afford a university education in the engineering field.” |

EWU team #628 was one of 24 teams from 21 universities competing in a division that included such institutions as Dartmouth, Boston University, Case Western Reserve and the Air Force Academy. This was the best finish EWU has ever had in this elite national tournament. |
| EWU COMPUTER SCIENCE STUDENTS ARE TOPS | | January 2004 | | Eastern Washington University’s Eagle Black team of computer science students ranked seventh in the Pacific Region – and tops in the state of Washington in the International Collegiate Programming Contest. EWU was the only institution from the state placing in the top 10. This is the third year in a row that EWU was the state of Washington champion in the competition which challenged 77 teams of high caliber computer science students from 33 colleges and universities to solve nine complex, real-world problems, with a five hour deadline. The Eagle White team placed 19th and Eagle Red placed 31st in the competition which drew students from Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Hawaii, northern/central California and western Nevada. |

| EWU RECEIVES GRANT TO CREATE A PATHWAY FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ENTERING THE TEACHING PROFESSION | | November 2003 | | Eastern Washington University is entering into a partnership with Spokane Public Schools and Spokane Falls Community College to create a simple and supportive pathway for high school students to enter the teaching profession. EWU recently received a $94,500 two-year grant from the state’s Higher Education Coordinating Board (HECB) for “Discover the Teacher Within,” a project designed to create a seamless process for recruiting and preparing future K-12 teachers through a collaborative partnership among the three educational entities. Under the grant, the three partners will nurture high school students’ curiosity about the teaching profession, channel it into a for-credit pre-teaching experience and smoothly transition them through community college and into Eastern through co-curricular planning and program implementation. |
| EWU’S FALL QUARTER ENROLLMENT OF 9,506 STUDENTS REACHES ALL-TIME HIGH | | October 2003 | | Fall quarter 2003 at Eastern Washington University has established the 10th consecutive quarter of record enrollments, with 9,506 students taking classes at the University. This is an increase of 328 students over fall quarter a year ago, when 9,178 students were enrolled. This equates to 9,387 full-time equivalent (FTE) students, an increase of 294 FTEs from fall 2002. Final 10th day enrollment statistics show that this is the first time in Eastern’s history that enrollment has topped 9,500 students. There is also a record enrollment of new freshmen at Eastern – 1,345, an increase of 64 from last fall’s 1,281 new freshmen. The number of new undergraduate transfer students is up by 143 – 1,113 compared to 970 a year ago. |
| TERRY SANCHEZ HIRED AS EWU’S BUSINESS RESOURCE CENTER DIRECTOR | | October 2003 | | Spokane business entrepreneur Terry Sanchez has been hired as director of the Eastern Washington University Business Resource Center. Sanchez, founder of Fitzbillies Bagels and first franchise holder for The Great Harvest Bread Company, will lead the center which has been newly formed to foster business development in the Inland Northwest. The center, which will work directly with entrepreneurs by providing improved networking, education and service, is being established by the EWU College of Business and Public Administration’s Center for Entrepreneurial Activities under a grant received recently by the Herbert B. Jones Foundation. |
| EWU LIBRARIES JOIN ORBIS/CASCADE CONSORTIUM | | October 2003 | | With the beginning of the current fall quarter, the libraries at Eastern Washington University are participating in Summit, a new Orbis Cascade Alliance catalog consortium that gives students access to the resources of more than 22 million books and other materials owned by 26 university and college libraries in Washington and Oregon. |
| 13 PAKISTANI EDUCATION ADMINISTRATORS AT EWU | | January 2003 | | Thirteen Pakistani school superintendents, Education Ministry administrators and other education professionals came to Eastern Washington University this winter as part of a program designed to prepare those leaders to direct education reform in their nation’s schools. They came to Eastern under a $222,031 contract the University received from RTI International, a non-profit corporation with expertise in education and training. RTI served as project coordinator for a multi-faceted, $60 million United States Agency for International Development (USAID) project to implement Pakistan’s Education Sector Reform Action. The umbrella project partnered with Pakistani educators to improve the education system in Pakistan, a nation in which many of the children have never attended school. |
