Longtime Employees Earn Distinguished Service Awards

 Ruth Galm and Mary Jo Van Bemmel, have been selected as the Administrative Exempt and Classified Staff Distinguished Service Award recipients for 2008. The announcement was made at the annual University Thanksgiving Dinner, Nov. 21. The awards included $1,000 for each recipient. The annual awards are given in recognition of outstanding service to the University.
Ruth Galm, executive director, Grant and Research Development, is a 27-year employee of Eastern Washington University. She has assisted hundreds of faculty members, thousands of students and countless people who have benefited from the grants and contracts secured under her direction in the Grants Office.
"Ruth exemplifies excellence in all aspects of her work. She has exceptional integrity, a deep commitment to the University and a desire to provide the University and its faculty with the tools they need to continue to meet the University's strategic goals," wrote Carolyn Sola, director EWU Early Head Start.
Mary Jo Van Bemmel, secretary supervisor in the Department of Mathematics has been selected as the Classified Staff Distinguished Service Award recipient.
Van Bemmel began her career at Eastern in 1990 and has been the secretary supervisor in the Department of Mathematics since 1996. She is the focal person for the department of 22 regular faculty, 12 graduate instructors and seven quarterly faculty. Together they teach more than 600 students each year. The department also employs approximately 30 undergraduate student employees whom Van Bemmel supervises.
"Mary Jo is one of those rare persons who not only has the expertise for the mundane, but the intelligence, insight and common sense to manage people and systems effectively, while never losing sight of the goals and mission of her department and the school," wrote Marc Hankin, adjunct faculty in the Department of Mathematics.
EWU Welcomes Visiting Scholar Zhi-zhen Wang PhD

Fall quarter, Eastern welcomed the first Visiting Scholar through the Sino-American 1+2+1 Dual Degree Program. Her name is Zhi-zhen Wang PhD (pronounced jeh-jen wong).
Zhi-zhen Wang is an associate professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics at Shanghai Normal University.
Her research interests are in the fields of robust and optimal control, networked systems, complex systems and control.
She received her MS in mathematics from Qufu Normal University and PhD in general mechanics from Peking University in 1999 and 2002, respectively.
Her visit at EWU is hosted by the School of Engineering and Computing Sciences, College of Science, Health and Engineering.

Operation Green Santa

The EWU University Bookstore, in cooperation with the Nebraska Book Co., will be conducting a buyback promotion titled "Operation Green Santa." The bookstore will donate $1 to the tree planting efforts at Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge from every 10 books bought back Dec. 1-12.
"Thank you to those University departments that got their textbook orders in early, as this will allow us to buyback more titles and ultimately provide more used books for the students of Eastern Washington University. So help us this holiday season to "Go Green!" said John Wilson, University Bookstore.
"We can help students cut the cost of books by giving them more cash for books they sell back to us which makes it possible to offer less expensive used books to new students taking the same class," said Wilson. "We would like to let faculty and staff know how they can help our students in this effort."
New "Facts at a Glance" Available
 The 2008-2009 Facts at a Glance are available online. Each year, updates to enrollment numbers, alumni facts and general University information are available online and in a pdf format for print.
Accepting Proposals for 2008-2009 Student Tech Fee

The Student Technology Fee Committee is accepting proposals for the 2008-2009 award year. Submissions are due Jan. 22, 2009. Visit the website to submit a proposal.
The Student Tech Fee is a quarterly fee that supplements funding of general use technology for every EWU student. The committee allocates these funds and expects to distribute approximately $770,000 this year.
The committee requests proposals that help students further their education and research goals outside of the classroom.
Examples of funded proposals include: free anti-virus downloads, 5GB of online storage, software discounts, checkout equipment and the General Access Computer Labs.
