Prior to coming to EWU in 2015, I spent eight years working as a backpacking and rock climbing instructor with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS), with the last six years spent working as the Operations Manager of the NOLS Pacific Northwest campus. I've led wilderness expeditions in the mountains of the Pacifc Northwest, Alaska, the Rocky Mountains, the Sonoran desert, the Yukon Territoy, and the Indian Himaylays. I am a certified AMGA Single Pitch Instructor, Wilderness First Responder (WFR), Leave No Trace (LNT) Master Educator, and have an Avalanche 1 professional level certification. I hold an M.A. in Leadership and Organization Development from Saybrook University and a B.A. in Sociology from Willamette University. When not playing in the wilderness, I enjoy spending time with my wife, Mizuho, and son, Kei.

Before finding my way to EPIC Adventures, I spent fifteen years pursuing the dream life of seasonal outdoor guide. I was fortunate enough to work professionally as a guide for Class V whitewater rafting, mountain biking, and caving. Aside from guiding, I also worked as a field instructor for backpacking trips with at-risk youth. These pursuits eventually led me to EPIC where I can share these experiences with EWU students. I am a Whitewater Rescue Technician, an EMT, and a wilderness medicine instructor with Wilderness Medicine Training Center. When I'm not at work, I enjoy the peace and quiet of gardening and playing with my dogs.

I received my first paycheck working in recreation in 1994 and have been doing so since then. Over the past 18 years I have spent most of my time snowboarding, skiing, kayaking, and rafting. I love to teach in the outdoors and usually end up doing so. I have many of titles and certifications in snowboarding through AASI, but now I spend most of my snowboarding efforts on The Grind here at EWU and teaching my children to love the slopes. I am also an ACA certified Whitewater Kayak Instructor and Rescue 3 Water Rescue Instructor, and have a few other outdoor certifications. My educational focus has been in Recreation, Leadership, and Education, and I have degrees in Outdoor Recreation and Organizational Leadership, and am currently working on a Ph.D.
